In order to use the links to newsfroups on these pages [identified with a ] several things need to be set up first.
- You must have access to a news server, normally from an ISP.
- Here is a list of publicly accessible news servers, not all allow posting and they tend to disappear as fast as they appear
There is m more comprehensive (and up to date) list at Free Usenet
- You must either
- Be using a web browser that has an integral newsreader such as Netscape or Internet Explorer
- Or have a browser that can be configured to launch a separate newsreading application
(my personal preference is to use a separate application, YA-NewsWatcher 2.2.0b13 for Macintosh (see About NewsWatcher).
Using a separate app will require some knowledge of where you are going, or a great deal of patience copy & pasting between URLs between the apps.
- Then the group must exist on the server. There are probably in excess of 22 thousend newsfroups on usenet adn not many servers have space to carry everything. Generally one could say that most servers carry most groups.
Watch out for local or country specific groups, US server admins will not be greatly motivated to carry uk.* groups. On the other hand there are news hierarchies that should be anywhere you look. (the 'Big 7').
- If these conditions are fulfilled, and you are online, then clicking a link should get you news.
You might also take a look at the usenet primer before taking the plunge.
