CONCENTRATION IN LESBIAN AND GAY STUDIES CREATED

A new concentration in lesbian and gay studies has been created and approved by the faculty council. To quote the informational material: "Contemporary debates over the characteristics and meaning of homosexuality occur within a variety of overlapping contexts: historical, social, cultural, and scientific. This interdisciplinary concentration draws from these contexts to explore lesbian and gay communities and liberation struggles in recent American history. Particular emphasis is given to seeming unproblematic concepts such as 'sexuality' itself-and to the theoretical work which seeks to make sense of sex, gender, sexuality, and the human experience of these."

    Course titles include:

  • Before and After Stonewall: An Introduction to Issues in Lesbian and Gay Studies
  • Topics in 20th Century Literature: Gay and Lesbian Literature
  • Special Topics in Theater: Gay and Lesbian Theater
  • The Novels and Essays of James Baldwin
  • Human Heredity
  • The Neurosciences
  • Somatic Studies
  • Alternate Traditions in American Literature
  • The Sixties in America
  • Liberation Philosophies
  • Sex and Gender
  • Constructions of Sexuality
  • Queer Theory
