The Committee in Support of Gays, Lesbians and Bisexuals has spent much time during the spring semester looking at its mission and planning events. The Committee developed a one page fact sheet to be used by the admissions office when students inquire about Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual issues on campus. Dean of Admissions, Gayle Pollack attended a meeting and fielded questions from members of the Committee. Members of the Allegheny community participated in the National Day of Silence, and carried cards explaining to others the reason for their silence. The Committee hosted poet Gerry Gomez Pearlburg for a luncheon and a well attended reading in the coffee house.
Plans are underway for Coming Out Week in October, and several students will meet with members of the Steering Committee over the summer to keep on top of things so that we hit the ground running when the fall semester begins.
Members of the Alumni Caucus may be interested to know that Stone United Methodist Church in Meadville has hired Susan Laurie as pastoral assistant. Susan is an openly gay woman who spoke in Ford Chapel during Sunday worship last fall. Stone Church has taken a prophetic step in hiring Susan, and it is good news indeed!
