Alumni Director Dick Stewart To
Retire Director of Alumni Affairs Dick Stewart, '56, concludes 38 years of remarkable service to Allegheny on June 30, 1999. During his final year, he will visit alumni in cities across the country, presenting "Reflections of a Lifer," a personal account of his association with the College, which began in 1952 when he arrived as a freshman from Titusville, PA. After graduating with a degree in English, Dick spent two years in the Army and two years as a high school English teacher in Jamestown, NY. In 1960, he returned to his alma mater as an assistant director of admissions. He rose through the ranks to become director in 1972, then dean in 1980. During those years, he established a national reputation for the quality of the Allegheny admissions program. In 1989, Dick left admissions to serve the College as dean of off- campus and special programs, and he subsequently was named alumni director. He has served Allegheny's 20,000 alumni (over half of whom he admitted as undergraduates) since January 1990. In 1997, he received the College's Distinguished Service Award for extraordinary contributions to the institution. Dick has already visited a number of eastern and mid-western cities this fall. "These visits will allow Dick's many friends and colleagues to say thank you for his friendship, wisdom and devotion to alma mater," said President Richard Cook. "I know he is looking forward to [them]." Dates for future visits will be sent out via snail mail and posted on the Caucus website as they become available.
