MY NEIGHBORHOOD
This page is an homage to the neighborhood in Baltimore where I live. The neighborhood is called Mt. Vernon. Why Mt. Vernon, you ask? It's most likely because in Mt. Vernon Square there sits the first monument to George Washington. That's right.. the monument in Baltimore was built before the monument in Washington, DC. The first few pictures are of the monument and other statues in the square.
There are also a lot of other things located along the square. For instance, the Peabody Conservatory is on the southeast corner of the square. The statue is Mr. Peabody for whom the Conservatory is named.
There are several churches in the neighborhood. Here are just two examples.
As is typical of a Baltimore neighborhood, most of the housing is row homes. These two pictures are a view of my street and the exact building in which I live. I have the rear half of the first floor.
Mt. Vernon is known in Baltimore as the "artsy" neighborhood. Not only because the Peabody Conservatory is located there, but also because the Baltimore School of the Arts and the Maryland Institute College of Art are located in the neighborhood. Mt. Vernon is also the center for gay life in Baltimore. It's nice to have most of the bars close by, but I'm not at them all that much. There are some that are a drive, unfortunately. At one time, and you see a picture of it, there used to be a leather store in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, around the 4th of July, it closed.
