- My name is Robert Byers
 I
am 55 years old. I often feel like I am 110, and behave frequently
like I am between 13 and 18.
- I
dropped out of school, at a very young age (grade 8), and never
had the courage to go back. For 25 years I was a hairdresser, and
retired from that 10 years ago. I am an Alcoholic in recovery, my
last drink being 15 years ago. When I sobered up, I finally got
the courage to go back to school, and enrolled in math and computer
sciences courses at a local university. I was very successful, but
the stress of trying to catch up, keep a home and job while being
a student in my 40's wasn't as glamourous as I had expected, and
discontinued the studies after proving to myself that I could do
it.
- When
I retired from hairdressing, I tried to get into the computer industry,
but without formal education today you all know what job hunting
is like. All the same I have had some very interesting and challenging
jobs in computer related work including everything from programming
to desktop publishing. I am addicted now to computers in general,
and IRC.
- I
have a 85 year old mother and a sister who are seriously ill. In
the last 6 years, I have had a minor heart attack, a triple by-pass,
femoral angioplasty, and a bunch of other stuff. I am currently
on disability, and have far too much time on my hands.
- I
have always seen my skills as that of a technician rather than that
of an artist. I have likely used most of the things we will be using
here, but am self taught, (hit and miss). I want to learn the proper
way to do things, and why we do them.
- Already
this class has afforded me more motivation and excitement than I
have known for quite a while, and I am really looking forward to
being a part of it with just a little fear and trepidation to boot.
- Believe
it or not after all this junk, I am quite shy and nervous around
people I don't know -- LOL
