LEGS #1
Garine
6583 Sabado Tarade #5
Goleta, CA 93117
($2 + stamps or trade)
This is a short zine based primarily around political actions, boy
(girl) cotts, and poetry. ALso, there’s lots of anti-diet stuff, animal
rights stuff, and a really incredible interview with Rod Coronado, an
ALF activist. Very cool first issue. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 28 pages.
LETTUCE BE #3
7206 North Broad Street
Philadelphia, PA 19126
($1?)
When I started reading this zine, I was like, “This is really fucking
good!” The bulk of this zine consists of memories of growing up
queer in suburbia. It’s so coming of age-y! The layouts are simple
cut and paste, but the simplicity is really effective, like in Cometbus.
There’s writing on visiting a sex store to buy a vibrator, dealing with
her fucked up, abusive famly, which I really related to, notes from a
mental hospital, retorts to lame quotes, and Michael’s sad story
about being queer in high school. This is so awesome. For real.
Jennifer is an extremely engaging writer. This zine rocks... 5 1/2”
x 8 1/2”, 28 pages.
LOVE AND LIBERATION #4 and #4.5
Travis M.
PO Box 1032
Colorado Springs, CO 80901
(donation)
This is a really cool effort. There’s alot of pro-activist stuff in here
from support for other activists to tips for the budding activist in
you, thoughts on roles in society. Alot of cool ideas are in here, but
I would have liked a more personal edge to the commentary. Fun
and inspiring at its best. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 20 and 4 pages,
respectively.
LUCID NATION #1
1015 N. Kings Road #313
Los Angeles, CA 90069
($2?)
This kind of reminds me of Tobi Vail’s Jigsaw zine. Stuff on Native
American identity and activism, writing that speaks out against
violence, especially against women, stuff on the UC Irvine hunger
strike, a review of “Strange Days” that criticizes it for it’s brutal
portrayl of rape and other acts of violence against women, tons of
animal rights stuff, herbal rememdies, short band bios, various
writing from the different Lucid Nation members, and a rant on “My
So-Called Life” that I didn’t really like much, personally, but I like
“MSCL”, so that’s probably why; also, Ricky, the “androgynous
friend” is a boy, not a girl. No matter. Still a cool zine and I’m really
impressed with all the stuff Lucid Nation is doing. They are a band,
as well (yeah, you knew that...), and their new CD is really great
L7-ish punk + rock. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 60 pages.
LUNATIC FRINGE #4
Laura
11 Hathaway Dr.
Princeton Jct., NJ 08550
($1 + 2 stamps)
This issue features Laura’s writing on having chicken pox, thoughts
on heroin and alternative music, the Philadelphia Riot Grrr;
convention, bad spelling in zines (I agree!), thoughts on corporate
zines, fucked up school, a review of Better Than Ezra live, thoughts
on sxe, and hilarious restaurant reviews in NYC. Also, a rant on
beauty pageants. My only complaint is that alot of this could have
been condensed onto a few sheets of paper. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 24
pages.
MALATHIMICHELLE #1
1556 Aldercreek Place
Westlake Village, CA 91362
($1.50 or trade)
Welcome to the world of Nisha and Jamie. This issue opens up
with interviews with Tamra of Lucid Nation and Jody Bleyle of
Team Dresch/Hazel, stuff on women’s history and identity, a really
kick ass centerfold (great quality, too!) of Peyton from Third Sex,
clippings, recipes (not vegan, though), tampon info, rape facts,
poems, obsessions, and more. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 36 pages.
MEDUSA #1
PO Box 586
Accord, NY 12404
($1 or trade)
This is a really thick zine in the vien of Function. There is alot of
stuff about anarchism in here - not boring, poorly-thought out
theories, either. There’s alot of observations of government control
and life under fascist control... There’s also a great deal of stuff
on women’s history and rights and health issues. A cool effort with
alot of information. 4 1/2” x 5 1/2”, 128 pages.
MINDWALK #5
PO Box 1495
Portland, OR 97207-1495
(trade)
This is one of those zines that really draws you in. The writing is
intense, and x-number of pages later, it spits you back out into your
world. There’s lots of writing in here in different forms that
addresses how Maresa builds walls and won’t let people in, which
is something I do, too. There is also writing about moving, losing
control, vegan, DIY pest control and deoderant, and other bits.
This is really instrospective, gives off the illusion of living in
Maresa’s head while she goes down to Powell’s books. 4 1/2” x
11”, 24 pages.
MY NEW GUN #5
Muffie White
U.S. Embassy - IPC
PSC 98 Box 34
APO AE 09830
($1 or trade)
This zine is really romantic - full of beautiful prose about literary
snobbery and how some people are left out, crushes, and aesthetic
value.. I feel really weird interpreting this. It’s very good, although
very short as well. 6” x 8 1/2”, 20 pages.
MY ZINE #1 and #2
Jessica Barnett
4 Butler Dr.
South Burlington, VT 05403
(a few stamps?)
This zine is really good. It’s just Jessica’s journal entries, many of
them reflecting familiar high school situations, but it just draws me
in, you know? She even reprints them straight out of the notebook
she wrote them in with pictures she stuck on the pages, as well.
Personal zine fans and nosy people, take note! Definitely worth
checking out! I also want to note that Jessica sent me a very cool
Allen Ginsberg-ish personal note along with her zine. She
mentions the word “transience” as being relevent. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”,
16 and 20 pages, respectively.
NO APOLOGIES #2
Tasha
21 King St. W. #3
Oshawa, ONT LIH 1A1
Canada
($1 + stamps or trade)
Tasha seems to have alot of frustration with fucked up stuff going
on in her town, which is evident in here. There are rants on
male-dominance in the scene, nazis, as well as sexism in
popculture, “womyn” vs. “woman”, confronting childhood emotional
abuse, and an interview with Better Than your Hand. 5 1/2” x 8
1/2”, 40 pages.
NOT YOUR BITCH #6
Christine
PO Box 11843
Olympia, WA 98508-1843
($1)
This is a really cool zine with an anarchist, punk slant and atypical
articles on guns (how-to advice for girls), queer identity musings,
thoughts on Native Americans in white history, a short short profile
of Pearl Hart, a college graduate turned criminal from a really long
time ago, prose on the fascist state we live in, celebrating pot, and
a long, but nevertheless funny and engaging account of her trip to
Europe. Recommended. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 24 pages.
NU TEXT
Meghan Lake
251 Rollingwood Drive
North Kinston, RI 02852
($1)
I don’t know why, but Nu Text reminds me of Huggy Bear lyrics. Its
very full of queer visionary prose, anti t.v.-style drama, and a great
piece on learning boy skills. Really fluid writing, but with solidity and
consistency in theme, and no rants in the traditional sense. 8 1/2”
x 11”, 10 pages.
OH BOY... #1
Barbie
58 Farley Place
Allendale, NJ 07401
($1 + 2 stamps or trade)
This is a charming mini that mixes personal writing on depression
(and shame), realationships gone bad, homophobic friends,
insensitive boys that act like they care when they want to get laid,
comix about her friend Dante that are so cute!, and other bits.
Plus, it’s all hand-written and completely readable! Oh yeah,
there’s also a great interview with the ever-sexy Allison Wolfe of
Bratmobile, Cold Cold Hearts, and Girl Germs fame. #2 is out
now, but I’ll review it next ish. 4 1/4” x 5 1/2”, 24 pages.
1-26-97
Liz
40 Arizona Blvd.
Hoffman Estates, IL 60194
(free, stamp, change)
This is a mini by Liz of One Blind Mouse. There are a few thoughts
on Ellen Degeneres, looking at things in terms of gender and
through feminism, and dispelling the notion that lesbian = feminist,
and vice versa. Alot like a letter froma friend. 4 1/2” x 5 1/2”, 20
pages.
OPERATION HEADRUSH #6
Rachel
21 Westbourne Rd.
Newton, MA 02159
($1 or trade)
I really enjoyed reading this. Rachel’s critiques of different
situations are refreshing, and she is good at telling stories. She
doesn’t make them funny, but she makes them in fables almost. In
this issue, Rachel tells about what happened when she got kicked
out of her old band, an account of activism and guerilla street
thatre by an anarchist youth group (I loved this piece!) that
addressed Columbus Day, imperialism, and genocide, thoughts on
why she would vote, even though she is an anarchist, anti-school
thoughts, a run-down on a girl-positive excursion, and other little
bits.a good mix of the personal and political. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 40
pages.
PANDORA’S BOX #1
Sam Culp
1270 Sunset Plaza Dr.
West Hollywood, CA 90069
($1 + 2 stamps or trade)
This is a really endearing effort and a vast improvement from what
I’ve seen of Sam’s past work. Good job! I read this in the car
when my mom was taking me to the doctor and thought it was
enjoyable. Pandora’s Box seems to teeter between being
provacative and rhetorical. Examples of rhetorical are the articles
on sexism in toy marketing and lame teen mags. The rest of this is
really educational and interesting and well-thought out. Sam
interviews Tula Asselanis, the creator behind I, Doll, a documentary
on Barbie, as well as her own thoughts on everyone’s most loved
and hated doll, “Fun with Unsanctioned Self-Expression”, which is
about public art and similar stuff, writing on old radio shows with
recommendations and contact info., stuff on The California Civil
Rights Initiative, which would end Affirmative Action and programs
for girls, among other things under the guise of equality, same sex
marriages (with activism tips), and reviews. This zine is way cool.
Similar to Suburbia. 7” x 8 1/2”, 32 pages.
PARANOY #13
Amanda
1477 Leonard
St. Peter, MN 56082
($1 or 3 stamps)
There is something deeply comforting to me about this zine. When
it rains, I always like to sit on my sofa, stare out the window, cover
myself with a blanket, and listen to the Velvet Underground. This
zine is like that. It’s security and comfort. I’m going to be moving
into some dorm at USF in Tampa in a few months, I’m kind of
nervous, and this zine, combined with wisdom from Lauren Martin
makes me feel better. This issue has interviews with Larry
Livermore and Amanda’s way cool roommate at school. We also
get punk stuff - reviews, excellent fiction (?), short poems and
quotes, dealing with homophobes, dealing with scary people, anime
worship, stuff on anti-gay laws in America (with alot of facts and
research), thoughts on voting, and more. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 48 pages.
PISCES #?
369 S. Doheny Dr. #106
Beverly Hills, CA 90211
($1.69)
JOcelyn from Cupcake thinks this is weird, and I must admit, I am
partial to agree. THis reminds me of um, a cut-n-paste Sassy
magazine, which is ironic since the editor says she doesn’t realte to
Sassy. There are plenty of magazine clippings to support my
argument, though. NOt only that, but when I look at this zine, I get
an eerie feeling fo deja vu! Anyway, some of this is random
thoughts on stuff such as “party mix” and favorite beauty products,
but there is material in here that i found more meaningful like
Kerith’s poem about being mixed race and the piece on being
manic depressive. I also liked reading about Kerith’s adopted
turkey and Amy Fisher. 8 1/2” x 11”, 46 pages.
POOR LITTLE RICH GIRL
Leanne
1002, 1601, 10 St. NW
Calgary, Alta T2M 4N1
Canada
($1?)
This zine is so fucking good. Leana dissects her rape/sexual
assault experiences. She says, “So, this isn’t some Seventeen
mag or YM-esque tale of terror about “how I lost my virginity (my
pride and joy, ha ha) and my sanity and my boyfriend,
blah-blah-blah, not at all, and I want to make it totally clear this is
not a soap opera exaggerated story. It is about what happened
and also how I am alive and surviving just fine...” I think that
paragraph really sums it up pretty well... This is really powerful
reading, a must for other victims of sexual assault, or any other
form of violence. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 24 pages.
PRINCESS SHANNON #3
10206 Bushman Dr. #424
Oakton, VA 22124
($1 + 2 stamps or trade)
There’s writing in here on self-hate, a cathartic piece about losing
someone to AIDS and how it makes her feel when people joke
about it, summer, gross and scary stories about cockroaches,
women’s awareness, a stolen article on the history of “gerbil
stuffing” in gay men, when the stereotype originated (during the
beginning of the AIDS hysteria in the early 80’s coincidentally), and
an account of objects people had to have surgically removed from
their anuses, thoughts on death, her curly hair, some writing that I
recognize as plaigarized from Thurston Moore (shame on you,
Shannon!), being fat and her history with diets, a really powerful
piece about how she was raped by her mom’s boyfriend, and more.
I think this zine could use some polishing, but otherwise has alot of
potential. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 48 pages.
PRUDE
Lauren Martin
Bard College
Annandale-on-Hudson, NY 12504
($2 + a stamp, $1 + 4 stamps, a trade + 4 stamps, or a trade +
$1!)
Shit. What can be said about this opus other than “you need it”?
26 girls and 1 boy write about sexuality. Contributors include
Ericka Power Candy, Jeannette Someone Loves Me in Ohio,
Rebecca Velvet Grass, me, Theresa Billy’s Mitten, Olivia Planet
Drag King, Rita Pure Tuna Fish, and others. The topics range
greatly, and a myriad of sexual persuasions and viewpoints are
represented. I think the public school system should issue copies
of Prude to students in Health classes! This is also a really good
way to “sample” various zines if you are new to this whole confusing
realm, and you don’t know where to start. 8 1/2” x 11”, 37 pages.
PURE TUNA FISH #6
Rita Fatila
16 Fairview Ave.
St. Thomas, ONT NSR 4X4
Canada
($1 or trade)
This zine is the shit, for real. There’s funny and righteous stuff on
“enlightened whiteys”, the zinester of color symposium, how she fits
in at her white and straight school, writing on the history and
meaning of the word “Latino”, “punker than you” attitudes, more
Latino/a history and political stuff, being angry at herself for
apologizing in a situation where she was the victim, which is
something I do alot, too, and other bits. Check out this rad,
important zine. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 20 pages.
PUSSY POWER #1
Mary
540 South Creek Road
Racine, WI 53402
(50 cents and a stamp?)
This is a collection of sparse clippings and comments. There’s alot
of anti-MTV sentiments, wishing the author could change lives, a
review of L7’s live presence, a description of the “perfect child”, and
a really beautiful piece by Cary (Not Mary) about what a victim
thinks of as she is assaulted. It’s a little skinny on content, and I
think some of the ideas expressed could be more thoroughly
examined. Nevertheless, a good, passionate effort. 5 1/2” x 8
1/2”, 20 pages.
QUIRKY SCRIBBLES #2
PO Box 18404
Irvine, CA 92623
e-mail: yelrihs@ucla.edu
Kind of an MRR copy, but more spunky. There are columns; I liked
Nate’s on the pointlessness of most activism (he’s not really talking
about direct action, but he means protests and voting and letters to
the President, etc.), interviews with Discount and Donuts’N’Glory,
reviews, random thoughts, etc. Alot of this could have also been
condensed, but nevertheless, I like seeing good punk zines without
the attitude. 8 1/2” x 11”, 36 pages.
RAGDOLL #2
Cheryl Tapper
535 Main Street Apt 1A
Metuchen, NJ 08840
($1 + 2 stamps)
This kind of reminds me of Power Candy, not because of the
content, but the approach... This issue has stuff about Cheryl’s
creepy ex-karate teacher, being intimidated and threatened on the
subway, thoughts on domestic violence, abuse, and arpe, comix by
Barbi of Oh Boy, a piece about catharsis by destroying pictures,
instructions for a cake walk (I did that in 4th grade!) and a vegan
cake recipe, and finally, a really long piece that examines Cheryl’s
realtionship to food and how being a feminist complicates the
issue. Also, good reviews and graphics. The look at food is really
important to read, and I found myself agreeing with Cheryl’s
feelings and ideas. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 32 pages.
RANDOM PONDERINGS #5
Elzza Gurl
The Evergreen State College
S 108 E
4215 indian Pipe Loop 108E
Olympia, WA 98505
($1 + a stamp or trade)
Ellza seems to have a penchant for graphics more than text, since
the bulk of her zine is pictures of decoarted rooms and drag
queens, but there is also an aimless quiz, poems, “Why Everyone
Should Shave Their Heads”, an information (not preachy) on
Universal Unitarians. 7” x 8 1/2”, 24 pages.
RED HANKY PANKY #4
Rachael House
23 Whateley Road
East Dulwich SE 22 9DA
London, England
($2)
Red Hanky Panky reminds me of "Pee Wee's Playhouse" sans the
hyperactivity and with a really obvious queer slant. I went a little
crazy over the first comic, which is about weird, pop culture foods
Rachael collects, like her R. Crumb candy bar, Catwoman
candycane, etc., a comic about Marina, a silent woman who was
Rachael's role model as a child (I think Marina is a British thing),
tons of funny/ironic comix about miscommunication in the queer
community, commentary on Julie Brurchill, a scary anti-bi columnist
(?), hating the comic boy club, balancing different aspects of her
life, sex stories, the wonderful word "gamahuche" (read RHP to
find out what it means!), bi marginalization, and more! Extremely
funny and light-hearted. I like Rachael's drawing style. It's pretty
simple, but she uses facial expressions effectively and varies the
different panels alot. Very cool, worth checking out, especially if
you dig comix or are interested in bi politics. 8 1/2" x 5 1/2", 36
pages.
RUBY SPARKLES #3
Jessica Speer
8 College Circle
Stratford, NJ 08084
($1, 2 stamps, trade, or “starry objects”)
RS is a really cathartic, emotional zine with intense writing on
depression, suicide attempts, her control-freak dad, what
happened when she ran away from home, wanting love, being
afraid to tell people she’s bi, and more. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 32 pages.
SLUG & LETTUCE #48
c/o Christine Boarts
PO Box 2067
Peter Stuy. Stn.
NYC, NY 10009-8914
Another issue of this classic punk zine. Thoughts on various
bands, anarchism, alternative living, and of course, the plethora of
reviews. newsprint, 16 pages.
SOMEONE LOVES ME IN OHIO #3
Jeannette
2543 Fenwick Road
Cleveland, OH 44118
Jeannette just moved to Boston and doesn't have a permanent
address yet (wait, you can try 233 Western Ave./Cambridge, MA
02139 now..), so if she takes awhile writing back, that's why. It's
really hard for me to review this zine because it is really personal.
Jeannette has a keen sense of self-awareness, I think, even though
she says that she has trouble verbalizing stuff. Sometimes it
shows in her more abstract writing, I think, but that doesn’t make it
any less powerful. Anyway, there is writing on desiring
romanticism, holding hands, love, etc., caring about issues and
losing passion at the same time, the virgin-whore complex burned
into her brain into Catholic school, memories of being a
cheerleader, a rebuttal of the feminist backlash of being labeled a
man-hater, playing indifferent, prose about reclaiming her body and
her beauty, some writing on asexuality that I didn't totally agree
with, but nevertheless is really valid, interviews with Archie from
Velocity Girl and Weston. Also, a rad and funny piece about how
she deserves to be the queen of cool and have a big hardcore emo
attitude. My choice quotes of the issue: The ending of the
cheerleading story: "It was a no win situation, so I sold out in order
to salvage any level of coolness I dreamed of attaining, but it didn't
even pay off in the end. I can, however, perform a multitude of
spunky and funky cheers on [cue] and fall into the pushup position
from standing straight without even flinching" and "Please please
please ask me just one more time if I hate men. I dare you to".
This zine rules. I love you, Jeannette! You rock! 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”,
36 pages.
SQUASH #4
2501 Stonebrook Dr.
Modesto, CA 95355
($1 or trade)
Squash is a very peculiar zine. It’s all about Tara. She talks about
her job, her new car, how she almost got kicked out of school for
having a pocket knife in her bag, her obsessions which range from
Pepperidge Farm fish-shaped crackers and chicken McNuggets to
nerds and Tetris to bumperstickers. Tara also has an incredible
knack for recounting places and events that most people would find
boring in this really fascinating way. This zine is pretty rad. I like it.
Really personable and fun. 4 1/2” x 5 1/2”, 56 pages.
STARACHE #10 1/2
Amy Funaro
9902 Hampton Woods
Kansas City, MO 64152
(50 cents and a stamp?)
I really like Starache. Amy seems like a really nice girl, She starts
out her zine with a scathing letter ominously signed by “the grrrls at
the box 11 chapter” along with her rebuttal - a good one that brings
up alot of questions about fucked up shit going on in riot grrrl, Lush
worship, appreciation of her friends and feeling upset over having
to end a friendship where she was taken advantage of, thoughts
on images, punk, and beauty, excerpts from the book Women,
Sex, and Rock’N’Roll, an Go Sailor lyrics. I wish Starache was
bigger because I like Amy’s coverage of music - it’s fresh and
enthusiastic instead of aloof and snotty, like I see in some music
zines. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 16 pages.
SUKI GIRL #21, 22, 23, 24
Joni
PO Box 237
North Freedom, WI 53951
(50 cents or trade)
Suki GIrl is mostly clippings from magazines, lengthy reviews of
records or zines Joni finds, little eassays and rants, and updates
on her life. #21 was a response to a letter, music reviews, a good,
researched essay about sexism in language, and a book review.
#22 has alternatives to silk-screening, that are probably easier to
do, but not really practical if you want to sell shirts or if you want the
shirt to look more professional, a review of the movie “The Master”,
a review of the Heroines 7” and a Cibo Matto 7”, Trampoline zine,
writing about meeting a dumb punk kid, and dreaming of
revolution. #23 has random thoughts on pop culture, a poem called
“Glorious Woman”, a review of PatLeidy’s rad comics, a reprint
from the Internet by Gloria Steinem about Larry Flynt and the movie
about him. #24 features a very sexy amazon on the cover, a
reprint of Kathleen Hanna’s diatribe on Mike Watt’s album, plenty of
contacts, Jem worship, a comic about Cuntor, a rad feminist out to
smash patriarchy, and other bits. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 16 pages; #23
and #24 are 20 pages.
SUPERFLY #6
Tess
Box 53115
Ottawa, ON K1N 1C5
Canada
e-mail: tdehoog@chat.carleton.ca
($1 or $2?)
Does anyone remember Bulldozer zine? This is kind of reminiscent
of it, if that means anything. There is alot of really great writing in
here on being fat, body image, fat oppression, sizeism, and
prejudice, etc., that makes it worth checking out on that alone, a
rant on trendy fake feminism vs. real revolutionary feminims, a ‘bad
things’ list, a hilarious “XHOw straight edge are you?X” quiz, a
good things list, analyzing queer internal issues, and more.
Apparantly, both Second Nature and Heartattack dissed this rad
zine. Fuck them! I think what Tess has to say is so important and
it’s cool to see more zines such as this in the often ignorant straight
edge community. 7” x 8 1/2”, 28 pages.
TEENAGE WHOREMOANS #4
Melanie
1806 Medina Street
Coeu D’Alene, ID 83814
($1, stamps, or trade)
This is almost like two or three zines stuck together. The first part
is prose about sexual violence and the loss of meaning. Also, there
is a Sylvia Plath poem that rocks, of course, thoughts on her
personal definition of feminism, writing on what she’s been like
throughout her teenage years, a poem about reclaiming her
self-love, thoughts on why she hasn’t shared her zine with any boys
yet, a rant on The People vs. Larry Flynt, which is also given
coverage in Suki Girl zine. affirmations, and more. Endearing. 4
1/2” x 11, 28 pages.
THE COMA #1
c/o KC
PO Box 7618
Tacoma, WA 98407-0618
($1 + 2 stamps or trade)
Favorite lists, thoughts on rape in movies (I thought the given
solution was really biased, though), a letter to an old friend, dream
analysis, and other bits round out this zine. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 14
pages.
THESE DEAD PETALS #6
Meghann
5369 Fox Run Road
Sarasota, FL 34231
($1 + 2 stamps?)
This is another installment of Meghann’s passionate writing, along
with some stuff by Puma Navarro. I think the pieces complement
each other. Alot of Meghann’s writing seems to revolve around
irony, in work ethics, in consumption, in values, and life. She also
writes about missing the time to read all day, a profile of Emily
Dickinson. Puma’s pieces, about urban American society and
dictated bauty via magazines are really powerful. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 44
pages.
THRILL #17
PO Box 20639
Seattle, WA 98102
(a stamp?)
This is a cute mini put out by Sewan of Tullycraft and formerly of
Crayon. There’s a tour diary of the Tullycraft/Bunnygrunt tour and
tons of reviews. Essential for all you budding indie rockers. 4 1/2”
x 5 1/2”, 36 pages.
TWAT! #2
Christine
PO Box 11843
Olympia, WA 98508-1843
($1)
This is a neat idea. You send Christine a half page ad for your
zine - describe back issues, describe yourself, and she compiles
them all in a zine. #2 is a really good source for UK girl zines. 5
1/2” x 8 1/2”, 20 pages.
VACULA #1
Jenny
EP RAMME
PO Box 145
02-793 Warszawa 78
Poland
($?)
The cover says “100% Femina Anarcho Zine”. The whole thing is
in Polish, so I can’t read it, but it looks pretty cool. The cover is a
vewry angry-looking woman spewing massive chunks. Yum. 6” x
8”, 48 pages.
VELVET GRASS #25
Rebecca
828 Brownwood Dr.
Roanoke, VA 24017
($1 + 2 stamps)
I love Velvet Grass! Rebecca writes about her new baby alot this
time, what she’s being doing since he was born, stories about her
grandmother, thoughts on censorship from her readers, fashion
gripes, craft ideas, and more. Rebecca’s drawing style is really
swell! 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 32 pages.

($1 and 2 stamps? or trade)
This is a passionate effort just dripping with sentiments of
sisterhood. There is a thing about traveling the world with another
girl, poetry, emotions, a really good quote about what could have
happened from “Go Fish”, a cool comic about safe sex, being
jealousy of boy celebritydom, a reprint of “Falling in Love: A Passion
Play”, a “Xena” conterfold, which thrilled me!, lots of thoughts on
Christianity, women in punk, anti-biphobia, an inspiring article about
how one of the editors got involved with Riot Grrrl and what it
means to her, and more. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 40 pages.

This is a unique zine. It’s about sexual abuse the author has
endured from a krshna perspective. It tends to alternate between
letters and momories. Increibly powerful, a must read. 5 1/2” x 8
1/2”, 16 pages.
THE WINGLESS MOTH #1 and #2
Mothra

(50 cents? or a stamp?)
#1: This is almost like an open journal for “outcasts, losers, freaks,
and anyone who has to deal with shit because the majority doesn’t
approve”. Pretty sketches, an account of a mutilated Barbie doll
Mothra made as an art project of sorts and how her mother
reacted when she saw it, philosophical ramblings, movie reviews,
and other bits. Kind of dark and dreamy. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 12
pages. #2: This issue follows the theme of being for “losers and
freaks”, but also little girls. THis issue also continues Mothra’s
stream of thoughts and sketches. She also discusses
schizophrenia in this issue, which I got alot out of reading, an
criticizes “Species” for being sexist. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 12 pages.
