MUSIC FULL LENGTH THE 5.6.7.8’S “Bomb the Twist” (Sympathy for the Record Industry) Trashy rock-a-billy surf stuff from Japan, course, abrasive vocals. BIKINI KILL “Reject All American” (Kill Rock Stars) Really polished, more poppy, better song-writing, and just as relevent and angry as always. BLAST OFF COUNTRY STYLE “In My Arms” (TeenBeat) More traditional than other releases, goofy spacy pop. CRASS “Penis Envy” (Crass) Eve Libertine and Joy De Vivre did all the songs on this album, which was made to dispell the myth that Crass was not a feminist band. Amazine and essential, of course. DOUGHNUTS “Feel Me Bleed” (Victory) Melodic, passionate, metally Swedish staright edge hardcore. EMILY’S SASSY LIME “Desperate, Scared, but Social” (Kill Rock Stars) The most violent teens around, really basic, stripped-down stuff, misguided choruses. FAKES “Real Fiction” (Chainsaw) A supergroup of sorts - Kathleen Hanna, Rachel Carns, Tim Green, Kicking Giant, Sue Fox, Billie Strain, Angie, and Phyllis. I hear Diamonds into Coal, too, who aren’t credited on the sleeve. Spoken word, new wave, mean punk, and other genres covered. This is kind of a concept album, “rock opera” kind of thing. GAIA “This One” (Sound Pollution) Abrasive Japanese hardcore. HEAVENLY “P.U.N.K. Girl” (K) The 10” that made magazines like Spin pay attention, dreamy pop with powerful lyrics. LYDIA LUNCH “Crimes Against Nature” 3xCD (XXX) Over 3 or 4 hours of Lydia’s spoken work. Includes “Oral Fixation” and “Daddy Dearest”. Amazing and over-whelming. PAIN TEENS “Beast of Dreams” (Trance) Dark, gloomy, etheral minimalism, what? PHRANC “Goofyfoot” (Kill Rock Stars) Folk music by everyone’s favorite Jewish lesbian. POISON GIRLS “Statement” 4xCD (Cooking Vinyl) The Poison Girls were fronted by a 40-something ex-housewife, and pissed off alot of people, including Crass, supposedly. This box set is their discography and captures the rawness and simplicity when they started to the synthesized sound of their last recordings. SCISSOR GIRLS “To: The Imaginary Layer on Skelatons” (Quinnah) Irreverant no wave, veering out of control. Very weird, but probably one of the best records of 1994/5. SCRAWL “Velvet Hammer” (Simple Machines) This will be out of print soon now that Scrawl are on a major label. Mellow pop. SISTER GEORGE “Drag King” (Outpunk) Catchy mean punk, militant queercore. SLEATER-KINNEY 10” (Villa Villa Kula) Angry, stripped down punk from the ashes of Heavens to Betsy and Excuse 17. SLEATER-KINNEY “Call the Doctor” (Chainsaw) Great dual guitar, dual girl vocals, screams, coordinated. TEAM DRESCH “Personal Best” (Chainsaw/Candy-Ass) This record really grew on me, and it’s always on my turntable. Melodic, passionate. TUSCADERO “The Pink Album”, “Step Into My Wiggle Room” (TeenBeat) Light-hearted pop, song-titles like “Nancy Drew” and “Sonic Yogurt”, instruments like the flute and glockenspiel. UNTITLED “Untitled” (Drag City) Beautiful piano music and sweet vocals by Cynthia Dall from Smog. Absolutely gorgeous. V/A “Julep” (Yoyo) Kreviss, Bratmobile, H2B, Kicking Giant, Cub, Tiger Trap, Slant 6, Tattle Tale, and more. V/A “Move into Villa Villa Kula” (Villa Villa Kula) Otherwise unreleased Sleater-Kinney songs, Kaia, Eileen Myles, Tattle Tale, Ruby Falls, and Azalia Snail. V/A “Oupunk Dance Party” (Outpunk) One of those records with no bad songs. 11 bands, including Double Zero, CWA, Sta-Prest, Tribe 8, and more. V/A “Periscope” (Yoyo) The third record in the series. Go Sailor, Excuse 17, Tummy Ache, Raggedy Ann, Cub, Team Dresch, Tattle Tale, and more. V/A “A Slick of Lemon” 2LP (Kill Rock Stars/Lookout) A great compilation including Emily’s Sassy Lime, Worst Case Scenario, Kitty Cat Spy Club, 3rd Sex, Frumpies, Go Sailor, Dig Yr Grave, Tourettes, Pussycat Trash, Mary Lou Lord, etc. About 40 songs all together. V/A “Stars Kill Rock” (Kill Rock Stars) Tiger Trap, Frumpies, Jack Acid, Tribe 8, Slant 6, Adickdid, Cheesecake, and more. BUBBY GIRL “My Own Pet” CD Boom Berneatha PO Box 5873 Irvine, CA 92716 This is a pretty good recording from these four girls. It sounds similar to Belly in terms of vocal style, except there’s more snarling, and occasionally, I think the music sounds like Third Sex. I like both of those bands alot, so I think this is great. DISCOUNT “Ataxia’s Alright Tonight” CD Liquid Meat PO Box 460692 Escondido, CA 92046 ($8 ppd) Noisy pop-punk with fast melodic female vocals. Honestly, I live in Florida, and if you don’t know this, there are like ten million pop-punk bands down here, so I’m a bit burnt on the whole genre, but in all fairness, Discount does a good job, definitely better than NOFX or Lagwagon or whatever other dumb band most kids like. I know it’s probably expected, but the singer reminds me of Cinderblock from Tilt. It’s pretty catchy, and their cover of “The End of the World” (by R.E.M., you fool) is really top-notch, far better than the original, which is already kind of classic in my book. I listened to it like fifty-million times in a row after I first heard it. JOLIE cassette Dead Meat 728 N Union Union City, IN 47390 ($4) This is spoken word. I guess I would compare it to the Kathleen Hanna 7”, but the layout is different in the sense that KH would switch from various scenes and return to them, drawing connections between them. Jolie speaks of the present in past tense, if that makes any sense. But the speech pattern is sporadic in the same way. It’s original, support this label! JOLIE N. SUPERSTAR! cassette Dead Meat 728 N. Union Union City, IN 47390 ($4) Another tape of Jolie’s spoken word. I think her pieces are better here than in the other tape I mentioned. I like her use of repetition and tape dubbing. Also on this tape is a long thing by her friend about getting screwed over by a guy, and conversations with friends. 99 CD Endearing PO Box 69009 2025 Corydon Ave. Winnipeg, MB R3P 2G9 Canada This is Laura Macfarlane’s (Sleater-Kinney) own band with ever-changing guests, like Madigan (of Tattletale). The music is all really emotional and dramatic, and Laura’s vocals are really full and almost haunting. I really like the way she uses different instruments (keyboard, xylophone, viola, cello, etc.) I also really dig how none of the songs sound the same. This is going to be huge. Totally amazing and beautiful. UNA CEJA “Niente” cassette Kimberly Larson PO Box 20716 Seattle, WA 98102 This is rock that really embodies “the Seattle sound” that was so popular a few years ago in some spots. The vocals remind me of Eddie Vedder a bit in the way that they croon, except it’s a girl, not a boy. Alot of this sounds like something I’d hear on the “adult alternative” station. To be honest, it’s really not my thing, but I don’t think it’s bad for the genre. STA-PREST “Let’s Be Friendly with Our Friends” 7” Outpunk PO Box 170501 San Francisco, CA 94117 ($3US, $3.50 can./Mex., $4 world) This is an excellent 2 song 45 from this “multisubculturist” /”pateticore” band. Devo fans, check out this band, they’re totally awesome. If you heard the “Vespa Sex” 7”, the production on this one is alot cleaner. Intelligent commentary in the sleeve, too. Hi Matt + Iraya. B’EHL/CLAG 7” Endearing Records PO Box 69009 2025 Corydon Ave. Winnipeg, MB R3P 2G9 Canada B’ehl is really simple pop that sometimes reminded me of Cub, but mostly stands on its own. B’ehl’s vocals are also really dreamy and Heavenly-esque. Clag is from Australia, and they’re really amazing. I think they’re probably my new favorite band. They have a cute little keyboard (imagine a lighter Mambo Taxi) and the bestest accents! I think their voices sound like Hayley Mills’s in “The Parent Trap”! KITTY BADASS/FUDGE DADDY-OS 7” Computer Crime PO Box 1684 Norwalk, CT 06852-1684 ($3) Kitty Badass is melodic pop-punk with girl vocals. “Two States” is totally catchy. Occasionally over-lapping vocals. I CAN’T DO ANYTHING WITH 50 CENTS 7” Computer Crime PO Box 1684 Norwalk, CT 06852 This is a compilation of Connecticut bands. Kitty Badass is really good, of course, but I also really liked Broken, who kind of had a bit of a crusty feel, and Ugly Truth, who reminded me of a cross between the Ramones and Husker Du...? MUSIC LISTINGS (thanks to Heather of Tally!) HARDSHIP POST “No Time” 7” Squirtgun Records/689 Queen Street W./Box 167/TO, ON M6J 1E6/Canada Wow, really 60s-ish rock with slightly chorus girl vocals! REBECCA WEST Cinnamon Toast/PO Box 2665/Halifax, NS B3j 3P7/Canada Similar to the quiet parts of PJ Harvey’s music, full of tension. TARA S’APPART “Little” 7” Tara White/PO Box 1701/Moncton, NB E1C 5X9/Canada ($5) Indie rock with sweet, angelic vocals and effects similar to Butthole Surfers. TRIKE /PO Box 262/Dartmouth, NS B2Y 3Y3/Canada High-pitched (but not nasal or childlike) vocals over acoustic music. Really beautiful.

GHOSTY GRAMS “A Very Ghosty (fill in the blank) cass. Heroes for Today 2007 E. 3rd St. Tucson, AZ 85719 A bass, drums, high-pitched screaming, and song lyrics about classmates, teachers, and being a teenage fag. Pretty simple stuff, it gets really funny in certain parts. There are secret bonus trax with a rap machine and a 9 year old girl singing. LUCID NATION “The Stillness of Over” CD Brain Floss 1015 N. Kings Road 313 LA, CA 90069 e-mail: Sekmet380@aol.com When I put this in, the first thing I thought of was older “Smell the Magic” -era L7. They probably are all annoyed with L7, since they also hail from LA, but I’m being honest, and I like L7, so I mean that as a compliment. I think the music is a little more on the punk side than the metal/rock side, since this review is kind of built on my comparison to L7. The lyrics are kind of nostalgic. Also, Lucid Nation do a zine. THE SHIMMY BECKERS “Barf-O-Matic” cass. Heroes for Today 2007 E. 3rd Street Tucson, AZ 85719 Really frantic catchy boy-girl pop with a keyboard. The songs are about food fights and the school cafeteria and other silliness. The Shimmy Beckers are so fun!, but unfortunately broken-up, but keep on the lookout for more treats from Heroes for Today central. “24 Hour Drive Thru” cass. Heroes for Today 2007 E. 3rd St. Tucson, AZ 85719 I lost the insert for this, but its a great comp. I listen to it over and over in my car, and I’m not sick of it yet. Fun pop and pop-punk from up and coming teen bands like Junior Varsity.. Some of these bands come from the Heroes for Today roster and some from Mindkill (Phlegm and the Sonograms, DPW, etc.), there are also bands made up of alot of zine kids. Pretty neat. This is one of my favorite things to listen to right now. Highly recommended. “Riot.” cass. Ego records 728 N. Union Union City, IN 47390 A comp. of spoken word (Jolie, Xana Godiva, Sabrina Gonzalez, Meghan Pout, and Anna C.) and music (Post Toasties, The Others, The Volanteens, Cindy Lou Who, Wavepool, Phlegm and the Sonograms, and Catcall). Post Toasties are pretty polished, I think, but I’m kind of burnt out on ska and they call a kid a queer as an insult, which isn’t very funny. The Others and the Volanteens are really good, so is Cindy Lou Who, which is kind of stripped down and aggressive. Anna C.’s spoken word about dumb people in punk was funny, and Meghan Pout’s piece was really cool, like her zine, and had this really pleasant buzzing sound in the back. I’m not sure if she put that in there on purpose, but it definitely gave her piece alot of structure and detail. 1
