from riot grrrl review #2

ALL HAIL ME #8
c/o Megan
142 High Street
Canfield, OH 44406
($1)
This is a personal zine with writing on beauty, being too serious, being saved by zines (this is really powerful), and God with lists of corny pick-up lines, sexual innuendo in “Star Wars”, popsicle jokes, and fears. All of the pieces fit together well forming a well-rounded zine. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 28 pages.

AUNT FRANNE #3
PO Box 523
Stratford, NJ 08084
($1 + a stamp)
This is an enthusiastic punk zine chock full of record reviews, zine reviews, column that showcase alot of diversity in views, and interviews with bands/people like the Lonewolves, Ben Weasel, and Dan Alward (record store owner). Plus, the lowdown on the Chicago Homocore Fest last year. AF is proudly queer and sports lots of illustrations by Anonymous Boy, GB Jones, and Queer Action Figures. 8 1/2” x 11”, 38 pages.

AWOL #1
Jenna DeLorey
4040 Olive Ave.
Sarasota, FL 34231
(donation or trade)
AWOL is subtitled “Youth for peace and revolution” and features articles by various people on these topics. The best articles are the ones on militarism, getting rid of ROTC in schools, military and propaganda, and racism, classism and imperialism in militarism. All of these pieces are really informative and insightful. I highly recommend that everyone, regardless of their stance on military read them. This issue also includes interviews with girl rappers 151 and Mizzery, No Fraud, and articles on kid/zine revolution, Asian-Latino unity, and violence. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 16 pages.

BILLY’S MITTEN #5
Theresa
6255 E. Via de la Yerba
Tucson, AZ 85750
($1 or trade)
A friendly personal zine with stories and thoughts on learning to drive, Christmas, maturity, discrimination, and more. Also, “Koffy Kat” comix, which remind me of “Life is a Joke” for some reason, and zine reviews. She’s also included an exciting Sonic Youth centerfold! I like Theresa’s youthful/hopeful perspective on things. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 36 pages.

BITCH RAG #5
1202 W. 2nd Street
Sanford, FL 32771
($2? or trade)
I don’t care that it says “We are not a riot grrrl zine!” on the cover because BR rules! Updates on the Lunachicks, getting a beehive ‘do (!), scams, wasting time at work, partying, sea monkeys, platypuses, nudie bars, and lots of juvenile humor. It’s like a cross between a scary college party and total camp with tons of sarcasm. I fully endorse it. 8 1/2” x 11”, 52 pages.

CHEESECAKE #6
Rhani
1724 So. Genesee
Los Angeles, CA 90019
($1 + a stamp or trade)
Very raw cut-n-paste format which switches between messy, artsy, and messy and artsy, Lots of prose on emotions like fear and anger, as well as rants on being queer and having people repeatedly ask you if you have any special boys in mind, and a great interview with Sue Fox. Also, hanging out in San Francisco. 5 124” x 8 1/2”, 28 pages.

CONFESSIONS OF A SEA MONKEY #2 and #4
Nettie Thompson
RR2 Box 190
Falls, PA 18615
This zine is so heavy on the small town/high school feel. Lots of inside jokes, interviews with average people, clippings from fashion magazines, you know... #2 has mourning over “My So-Called Life”, horoscopes, interviews with Rex Hoyt whose response to the question “would you consider yourself a ‘punk’?” was a resounding “NO!” and Sara Prudente who is confused by knock-knock jokes, a review of a Weezer show, and miscellaneous stuff. #4 has top ten lists, more horoscopes, story about a fake slug named Pete, celebrity citings, fun with fire, an interview with Bob Talrico, who is a Tori Amos fan, and an interview with some band called the Gamera Crowns. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 12 and 16 pages, respectively.

DEMIREP #1
Christine
OUT OF PRINTbr>New Hope, MN 55428
($1 + 2 stamps or trade)
Demirep is a thick zine with tons of writing on feminism - anti-feminism, body image, make-up, marriage, etc. Plus, stuff on homophobia, vegetarianism, and tons of Babes in Toyland (hey Christine, have you heard “Crunt”?) stuff. There’s more in here - reviews, fiction... and to top it off, the whole thing is like, 95% text, which is pretty cool. 8 1/2” x 11”, 40 pages.

DON’T THROW UP #2 and #4
Amanda
6 Maple Street
Great Barrington, MA 01230
($1 or trade)I like Amanda because she examines stuff alot and comes up with some really brilliant stuff. DTU is very frank, but she doesn’t waste space with confused rambling. #2 has stuff on ARA, a rant on how slackers suck, an interview with a 5-year old called “Kids are Smarter Than Adults”, abortion, the token homo in American television, sxe stuff, getting fucked over, and more. #4 looks beyond the dogma more than #2 and also has really touching stuff on women with AIDS, a lengthy conversation on sex, rants on slander in zines, being a girl skater, androgyny, and more. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 20 and 24 pages, respectively.

ESSENCE OF BEINGS
13 Spencer Drive
Sutton Heights
Telford, Shropshire
TFY 4JY
England
(?)
This is an art zine with lots of collage and drawings that seem like a mix between those of Blair Wilson and the woman who designed the cover for the second Cub LP. There are all of good quality. Plus, poetry. 6”x 8 1/2”, 20 pages.

FANTASY BUS QUEUE #1 1/2
Maddy
96 Cedar Road
Highfields, Leicester
LE2 1FY
England
($1 or trade, trades preferred)
How can you miss with a zine that features Cheery Chums on the cover! Lots of hand-coloring and hand-stamping throughout the zine, too, and neat-o British slang, like “knickers”! Maddy’s filled this ish with comix, writing on harassers/stalkers, seeing the Raincoats, and more. Plus, a fair amount of dyke grrrl pride. 5 1/2” x 8”, 28 pages.

FDCT
Amanda
6 Maple Street
Great Barrington, MA 01230
($1 or trade)
This is a big list of zines, mostly sxe and riot grrrl zines with descriptions written by the editors and ordering info. This is a pretty good resource that I’d like to see get bigger. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 20 pages.

FEMME FLICKE #5
Tina Spangler
99 Hancock Street #4
Cambridge, MA 02139-2226
($2)
This is a really good resource if you love film or if you don’t know much about film, but want to learn. This issue has an interview with GB Jones about her new movie, and among other things, grrrl films (!), reviews, contacts, an interview with Mary Helium on music videos, a profile of Agnes Varda, a female film maker who made her first film with little knowledge of how to do so, a guide to female directors, and kick-ass layout/art. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 40 pages.

FEMME SKUNK #1
PO Box 9785
Washington, DC 20016
($1?)
This is Eve of Picklejar’s solo effort and is, as she puts it, more autobiographical. It kind of reads like a movie in the vein of “Gas Food Lodging” or a Judy Blume book even, if you can imagine that. She writes about school (starting at the beginning) and how she functioned in it, sexual manipulation, queerness, and more, in a way that really drew me in. It’s hot sweaty summer nights on paper. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 20 pages.

FIVER BEYOND #1
Ainslie
624 Waterloo
Winnipeg, MB
R3N OT1
Canada
I’m pretty impressed with Ainslie’s new zine since King Size Queen. There’s good writing in here on feeling stifled, doing nothing, a review of I Mother Earth, really interesting stuff on India and the dam the government is building on the Naramada River, convenience over quality, being apathetic and middle-class, women in India, TV., and various clippings. I love the intro about her Nana playing slot machines in heaven. I think Ainslie’s moved, so try writing to her before you send any money. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 32 pages.

FOREVER BOY
Box 433
Gotha, FL 34734
e-mail: taraX@cris.com
(a stamp?)
I’m not sure if this address is good still. This is kind of an emo-y mini with prose/poetry stuff on insecurities, pain, etc. Tara also does Diary of Now and Li’l Sister. 4 1/4” x 5 1/2”, 8 pages.

FUEL #13
Anaconda Press
PO Box 146640
Chicago, IL 60614
($3)
Fuel is a glossy literary and arts zine, but it’s not poetry and mediocre collage. There’s alot of good fiction in here from alot of different people and well-done black and white drawings. This issue has less graphic aesthetic than previous ones. Note that Fuel is not necessarily a feminist zine, but more of a lit zine edited and published by a woman. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 44 pages.

GLOBAL MAIL #14
PO Box 410837
San Francisco, CA 94141
($3)
Global Mail is an excellent resource for anyone who loves getting mail. It’s main focus tends to be on mail art, but there’s plenty of room for zines, too. I saw a different address is Queer Zine Explosion, leading me to believe Ashley has moved; maybe her mail is being forwarded. I also listed the other address under “places to get reviewed” in this issue. Ashley lets the readers actively participate in global mail as a crux in mail art by printing tons of comments and letters that open up alot of debate. Definitely worth $3. 8 1/2” x 11”, 40 pages.

HANDS OFF.
Heather Lynn
PO Box 724
Lake Zurich, IL
60047-0724
(a stamp or trade)
Hands Off. is a small little zine full of really powerful writing, alot of which is about being fucked up, depressed, divided, etc. This is all wonderful stuff that will either make you feel like you’re not alone or give you alot of insight on what it feels like when you are in a really fucked-up situation with no one helping you out. The words are literally crammed onto each page, which adds to the confessional theme. 4 1/4” x 5 1/2”, 28 pages.

HOMOTILLER #6 and #10
Box 460695
San Francisco, CA 94146-0695
($1?)
This is somewhat of an indie rock/punk zine. Don’t be confused by the name - I don’t think this is necessarily a queer zine. #6 features interviews with the bands Unsane, Rodan, and Come, as well as writing on American entertainment and reality, interesting caffeine facts, and an interview with Alec, a musician and doorman. #10 has responses to a reader survey, a strange, drunken interview with the drummer for Guided By Voices, stories about being dressed up like food from different perspectives, including an interview with the Sugar Crisp Bear, an interview with one of the members of GodHeadSilo, illegal fire stories, an interview with a member of Cobra Verde, and an interview with Cynthia Dall. Lots of show and record reviews, which didn’t do much for me since the stories and funny interviews are the real stand-out here. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, I forgot how many pages are in #6, and I can’t find my copy now and 48 pages in #10.

I THINK I CAN#2
PO Box 20859 B-181
Fountain Valley, CA 92728
($1 or trade)
Lots of hand-writing, grainy type, and cut-n-paste. In this issue: prose, being “just a girl”, a long review of a Bikini Kill show that addresses male domination at shows, and thoughts. It says that #3 or #4 will feature an interview with Tobi Vail. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 16 pages.

I’M SO FUCKING BEAUTIFUL #3
Nomy Lamm
120 State NE #1510
Olympia, WA 98501
($2?)
This is probably one of the most important zines around. I think everyone should read it; I know it changed my life. I highly recommend #1 and #2 because they kind of build a foundation for #3, but you could probably understand it on its own, right? This whole zine is about body image and fat oppression, which really isn’t addressed enough as valid. This issue addresses slogans, connecting fat oppression to other things, like disability, the separation between the mind and body, health, the origins of fat oppression, sex work, and more. Alot of people have written for this, so you have a smorgasboard of views and opinions. This issue is pretty academic, but Nomy uses alot of real life and personal instances to keep it grounded... I guarantee you that this zine will make you think and challenge yourself. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 64 pages.

INSPIRATION FINALLY CAME...
Angee
PO Box 20410
New York, NY 10021
(a stamp or trade, maybe even a letter)
I think IFC is supposed to be a teaser for Angee’s bigger zine, but don’t quote me on that. This is mostly poetry, quotes, and pictures of Lucy VanPelt. 4 1/4” x 5 1/2, 8 pages.

KETCHUP #11
3603 Sexton St.
Alexandria, VA 22309
($1 or trade?)
More enthusiastic gossip from the Fly Paper girls. This issue has reviews of Australian movies (“The Sum of Us” and “Muriel’s Wedding”), feeling empowered by learning self-defense from “Free to Fight”, underwear, being a topless girl and dumb boys who think you’re doing it for them, show reviews, gender stuff on TV., crushes (they suck, she says), the clothesline project (I’m going for the second time in 2 days!!!!), and being bored. 5 1/2”, 8 1/2”, 28 pages.

LETTERS TO CELEBRITIES
Nomy Lamm
120 NE State #1510
Olympia, WA 98501
($1 + 2 stamps)
Nomy is my fuckin’ hero. I saw her read at the Dirty Bird festival in San Francisco, and she blew me away. This is a collection of, as the title says, letters to celebrities. Most of them are done in a kinda poetic, dramatic way, some of them are funny as hell. My favorites are the letters to Lorena Bobbit and Cyndi Lauper, but she’s also written to Richi Rich, David Duke, the 1000 pound man, Eddie van Halen, Ian MacKaye, and Edie Sedgewick. Most of the letters being up really important issues like racism, classism, sexism, patriarchy, etc. 7” x 4 1/4”, 32 pages.

LINT
Sam Culp
1718 Ferrari Drive
Los Angeles, CA 90210
(a stamp?)
WOW, I’m so jealous! Sam lives in the 90210 zip code! That’s so wacky. It would be so funny if she did a zine all about “90210”, but not the “college years”. There’s stuff in here on Sisterhood Books in LA, “The Dinner Party”, the virtues of being a girl (although I must admit most of them didn’t even apply to me, and I’m still a girl), a Marge Piercy poem, poll results, and other bits. 8 1/2” x 11”, 12 pages.

LOVE IS LOVE ISN’T #2
Jane Liddle
9 Skytop Drive
Manchester By the Sea, MA 01944
(50c)
This is a sometimes sad, sometimes sweet, sometimes pissed little zine that reminds me of Function and Crass lyrics. There’s stuff on women in the military, body image, sexism, how trying to rationalize when you want to scream isn’t feminist, girl love, pain, and being brainwashed. My favorite quote: “Do you think you could not talk about music for more than a minute?” 4 1/4” x 5 1/2”, 44 pages.

MAMASITA #4
Bianca Ortiz
2415 Fordham Street
San Pablo, CA 94806
($1 or 3 stamps)
Holyfuckinshit, another written assault from one of my favorite zinesters. I swear, she just gets better with every issue. This issue has a bold layout with neat graphics and articulate writing that really tears shit up. I’ve been noticing alot of zines having an “I’m not a slogan” kind of theme, and I’m really for this because I think it might help us dig deeper into our problems with exploiting others or ourselves. There’s stuff in here about being a non-white American, starting a band (this is so great, read it), punk rock as capitalism, pendejos (dumb people), the chicano/a word, race identity, criticism, being multi-faceted when people want you to be one-dimensional, learning Spanish, and more. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 24 pages.

MONS OF VENUS #9
3566 Walker Ave.
Box 1203
Memphis, TN 38111
($1 + 2 stamps)
MOV is chock full of hand-written accounts of going to a show and having car trouble, body image/war, reality, loving nature and hating people, hanging out in Miami Beach, oppression, being disconnected from people, and a piece on not driving. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 28 pages.

MUFFIN BONES #11
Emily K. Larned
Wesleyan University
Box 4724
222 Church Street
Middletown, CT 06459-4724
($1 + 2 stamps or trade)
Emily is a very talented writer. Her writing is very detailed, and I honestly felt like I was there when she wrote about hanging out with her friends, having hot drinks, her continuation of thrift store finds, being a film projectionist, and ladybugs, movies, and zines. MB is a true perzine - no rants, no band worship (except for bits on Tanya Donnelly), just really enjoyable stories about Emily. 7” x 5 124”, 24 pages.

MY HOUSE
Shayna
3402 Campbell
Rolling Meadows, IL 60008
(a stamp?)
My House is a collection of memories of stuff that happened to Shayna at her house on Campbell street. Being a little kid, playing games, being afraid, being hurt, going through middle school, death, you know.. This is a very naked autobiographical account. Reading it brought back some of my own memories. I heard Shayna moved to Portland or Olympia or one of those places, but maybe her mail is being forwarded from this address... 4” x 3”, 48 pages.

NECKTIE SOLUTION #1
Judy Panke
RR 1
Golden Lake, ON KOJ 1XO
Canada
($1 or $2? or trade)
All hand-written, emotional, angry, and “unpeppy” is what Judy’s going for here. Alot of this is rambling and ranting on various topics - the stuff you talk about with your friend late at night on the phone, like going home from school because you had a cold, what you had for dinner, what’s pissing you off, and music you like. Some of her information is a bit dubious in origin, but maybe I misconstrued it. I liked the writing on substance abuse especially. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 28 pages.

ONE BLIND MOUSE #1
Liz
40 Arizona Blvd.
Hoffman Estates, IL 60194
($1 + a stamp or trade)
This is a collection of Liz’s writing over a period of the last few years. There’s writing on make-overs, mean and stupid people at her school, her brother, X-Ray Spex, her sister’s friends, the word “cunt”, newspaper clippings, and shaving and not shaving her legs. Some of it doesn’t have a particular point she’s trying to get across. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 28 pages.

OUTPUNK #4 and #5
PO Box 170501
San Francisco, CA 94117
($2)
#4 is a bit old, from June 1995, actually, but it’s still an enjoyable read and a great introduction to queer culture that doesn’t limit itself to punk or music. This issue features a really lengthy, but thorough interview with Vic St. Blais, a male model and prostitute, a short talk with Jody Bleyle about the Free to Fight project, and an interview with Rick Seger, a transgendered zine editor (P.U.N.K., which is subtitled “The Life Magazine of Bay Area punk”), as well as Jon Ginoli’s (of Pansy Division) take on cute boys in indie rock, stuff on “In Search of Margo-Go” (a cool movie coming out), a bio of Behead the Prophet No Lord Shall Live, a really informative and easy-to-use guide on the Internet (which doesn’t have a queer focus), a funny and annoying article on fake queerpunk, music news, and plenty of illustrations by Queer Action Figures and Tony Anonymous Boy. Whew. #5 is even bigger and better than #4, if you can believe that. This issue features a hilarious recount of Tribe 8 ending up on the bill of a concert put on by Luther Campbell of 2 Live Crew (he heard they perform topless), plus Leslie Mah’s top ten babes, an interview with Joan Jett Blakk (a drag activist), a really casual interview with Donna Dresch, the band Mouthfull, an excellent assessment of punk rock and MRR that exposes alot of ignorance and counter-productivity within that movement, an interview with Pedro Serrano, an HIV+ queer skinhead, a really informative piece on HIV/AIDS transmission between dykes, reviews, and the usual outpunk news. Also Queer Action Figures and Tony Arena’s lovable comix. Always a fun and joyous read, and alot more interesting than 99.9% of what is out there. Essential. 8 1/2” x 11”, 56 and 64 pages, respectively.

OUTWARDLY PLEASANT #5
Kris
331 Bellezza Drive
Manchester, MO 63021-6401
($1 + 2 stamps or a trade)
OP possesses some quality I can’t exactly pinpoint that makes me like it. I get the impression that she has more to say than most of her peers. There’s alot of writing in here on high school, not rants, but stories about the different cliques and status. Kris is one of the few people I’ve met who is interested in traditional success, but doesn’t want to be a part of the social structures that go with it (status symbols), having an unsupportive father, poetry, rants, varied bits on allergies, “Star Wars”, her cat, and more. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 24 pages.

PANOPHOBIA #4
PO Box 3461
Maplewood, MO 63143
($2)
This is the cutest, sweetest zine I’ve ever seen! It’s full of reader participation, and has a specific theme - fears. This issue has interviews with Avocado Baby, The Softies, Franklin Bruno, Mary Lou Lord, Helium, Kaia, Tullycraft, Skylab, Diskothi-Q, and the Crabs, all in regard to their fears. Plus, it has a bio of Natalie Wood, an actress and hydrophobe, pages of reader fears, tons of comix, and LOADS of great art. I love the drawings of Jen by the readers. Unbelievably funny. 5 1/4” x 5 1/4”, 78 pages.

PARANOY! #5
1477 Leonard
St. Peter, MN 56082
(3 stamps, $1, or trade)
This zine reminds me alot of Jumbo Shrimp, for those of you who have read it because of the similar feel and slant. Scott from Icarus was Right. seems to like them both, too. And they’re both from my home state! Wow! Anyway, this issue has stuff on dumb boys, how to be punk (is this a joke?), people Amanda and her friends hate (which won’t make sense unless you know them, too), summer, a really funny account of contributor Courtney’s shitty vacation to North Carolina, open letters about changing and being fucked up, going to Baltimore, hanging out with friends, straight edge, reviews, and more. I would call it a “personal journal”. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 32 pages.

PICKLEJAR #24
PO Box 9785
Friendship Station
Washington, DC 20016
($1? or trade)
This zine is by Eve and Hugh, who are fresh out of high school, along with 3 contributors. There’s pretty good writing in here on being Jewish in the south and classism, erotic dyke stuff, a super piece on being an Arab by Nadya, kid power, and alot of fiction-non-fiction that is similar to writing by Lynda Barry. No whiny teen angst here. Highly recommended. Eve also does The Femme Skunk. 8 1/2” x 11”, 22 pages.

PLANET DRAG KING #2
Olivia Edith
3233 Juliet Street
Pittsburgh, PA 15213
($2)
Visually, this kind of reminds me of a DIY, punk rock “Dr. Katz”. The whole zine is pretty much about being a dyke. It’s well-rounded and funny from the start. There’s alot of poetry and song lyrics throughout and LOADS of graphics, as well as a hilarious story about running into an attractive woman on the street, the drag king of the issue, having her catch Olivia’s gaze, and what Olivia wanted to tell her, being young and queer, homophobic violence, online resources, and more. This is pretty good - I’d like to see more of Olivia’s original artwork because it’s so good and more of her stories since they read on a first person level. Recommended. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 24 pages.

POWER CANDY #16
PO Box 32534
Kansas City, MO 64171
(3 stamps? or trade)
I totally love this zine. It’s interesting, empowering, and well-written. Ericka has included alot of writing in here on her messed-up family situation, a profile of Alan of Ugly Boy zine, self-assessments, lists of good things ( I love making them, too), witnessing a family get evicted and lose almost all their possessions, getting on government disability along with case details, seeking inner calm, and more. I highly recommend this to abuse/incest survivors because it has alot of really important and touching writing on that topic that may give insight/help to those dealing with that. I also recommend previous issues because Ericka seems to always have something relevant to say. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 44 pages.

PSYCHOBABBLE #4
PO Box 1879
Strawberry Hills 2012
Australia
($1? stamps?)
I have to be honest, it was hard for me to get through this because of the chaotic layout. You’ll find yourself turning this zine is circles, trying to read it. This seems to be an okay resource for Australian stuff, like zines. Also, reviews of forgotten books (pulp and otherwise), photographs of unbelievable food products (Crapsy Fruit, MukkyYogurt, etc.), rants, pet peeves, and more. I’m really sorry about this mediocre review, but I got headaches trying to sort out the text, backgrounds and clip art...5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 32 pages.

PUS SOUP #4 and #5
Judy Panke
RR #1
Golden Lake, ON KOJ 1XO
Canada
($2 for #4, $1 for #5)
PuS is a poetry zine, but much of it veers into the personal zine genre. Judy also does Necktie Solution, and this tends to be a bit more upbeat, but not always. This ish has the ins and outs of Judy’s life, unconventional hair dye tips, Degrassi vs. My So-Called Life, rants about annoying pen pals, an amazingly detailed essay trying to figure out how she cuts her tongue, going vegan, having low-self-esteem and how it relates to being punk (this is a really good analogy/connection), stuff to do in her area/complaints about how it sucks, prose, fiction, poetry, lists and plot descriptions of Berenstein Bears books, and another frighteningly detailed account of pooping and running out of paper. Sometimes gross, sometimes funny, sometimes sad. Judy’s really into writing letters, and I think they compliment her zines and vice versa. 8 1/2” x 11”, 30 pages. #5 is less literary as #4, and smaller, but the writing is more personal. There’s quite a bit of writing on here on punker-than-you people and how dumb they are, being bored/having fun, Rancid vs. the Sex Pistols - who’s more punk?, remembering Kurt Cobain, missing someone, and more. “...Even the little things in life count... I guess I sorta live by those words because I almost never do anything big or fun”. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 35 pages.

THE RAINY DAY CHRONICLES
Shayna
3402 Campbell
Rolling Meadows, IL 60008
(2 stamps?)
Shayna did this little zine some time ago, and she also did My House. I heard she’s not in Illinois anymore, but her mail is probably being forwarded or something... This is really stark and straight-forward , dealing with insecurities and such. I would like to see more zines tackling issues like this. She writes about her feelings about nudity, having an alcoholic mom, beauty, poverty and welfare, boys and feminism, school, kid power... This issue is kind of devided between personal stuff and then external rants, but it’s still good, and I don’t doubt that Shayna has put out tons of great zines since this one. 5 1/2” x 4 1/4”, 28 pages.

THE REAL RAMONA
16 Fairview Ave.
St. Thomas, ONT.
N5R 4X4
CANADA
(?)
This is a somewhat unusual zine because each “issue” is different and you are more likely to get a copy in the mail than by ordering it... I’ve already received it like, 3 times over. Basically, it’s a chain letter type of thing within the riot grrrl community where girls list their zines with descriptions. Cool idea because it’s the kind of zine that tends to itself. 8 1/2” x 11”, 1 page.

SELF DEFENSE mini and #1
Caroline Wachtler
35 Hamilton Gardens
St. Johns Wood
London NW8 9PX
England
e-mail: caw5658@is.nyu.edu
($1 and a stamp?)
This is a cool idea - a zine all about self defense. The mini is pretty basic stuff - “eyes, knees, groin, throat”, etc. - many of you may know this stuff, but then again I bet even more don’t. #1 is really great and has stuff on taking a self-defense class, dealing with sexist skate shop guys, masturbation, learning about the vulva, breaking taboos, avoiding icky crotch infections (yeast infections, bladder infections, etc.), and the best clip art around. I really recommend this, especially #1 because it debunks alot of myths about female strength and our bodies. 4 1/4” x 5 1/2”, 8 pages and 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 16 pages.
