ACT-UP (ahckt uhp)

1. abbv. AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power: An organization founded in the mid 80's in New York City to fight the spread of AIDS and bring pressure to find a cure for the epidemic disease. Today, ACT-UP still has a largely gay following, but it is not a gay rights organization, it is a AIDS organization.
2. adj. Term used to describe usually gay male who is characterized by throwing himself into thirty different causes at once in a mad attempt to change out project society into a gay-friendly utopia by his twenty-third birthday. compare club kid, Joan Crawford fan club.

androgynous (ahn-drah'-jih-nuhs) adj.

1. Term to describe somebody that fits both traditional male and traditional female stereotypes. compare epicine.

beard (beerd) n.

A person of the opposite sex (2) posing as or acting as the significant other of somebody who is gay.

beige (bayj) adj.

Vapid, insidious, neutral, the anti-fabulous.


bisexual (bi-sehks'-shuel) adj. n.

A person who is sexually attracted to people of either sex (2) and gender.

butch (bootch) adj. n.

Term used to describe a lesbian that openly defies female gender roles, usually characterized by short hair, boyish clothing, muscles, and/or working for UPS. compare femme

camp (kahmp)
1. n. Rare. An effeminate style and mannerism affected mainly by gays, however anyone can 'camp it up.'
2. vi. Rare. To behave in an exaggeratedly effeminate or self-mocking way.


campy (kahm'-pee) adj.

Rare. One who behaves in an especially effeminate manner, or 'camps it up'.


celibate (seh'-le-bet) adj.

Somebody who abstains from sex (1).


Christian Right Wing (kres'-tchehn rit wing) n.

The group that comprises the major opposition to gay rights.


closeted (claw'-seh-tehd) adj.

Term used to describe somebody who is gay but thinks nobody knows it. see in the closet. compare out (1).


club kid (cluhb kihd) n.

A gay male that frequents the gay bars and shakes his groove thang in an attempt to reach diva status on a weekly, if not daily, basis. Often overextended to include straight females. compare Joan Crawford fan club, ACT-UP (1).

crossdresser (kraws'-dres-er) n.

A person who likes to dress in the clothes of the opposite sex (2). Crossdressers are usually straight. compare transvestite.


conversion therapy (kuhn-vehr'-zhun thay'-ruh-pee) n.

"Therapy" that utilizes heavy doses of drugs and/or religion to "convert" a person from homosexuality to heterosexuality. Usually ends with a miserable celibate homosexual frustrated that he or she will never really be straight. see reparative therapy.


come out [of the closet] (kuhm owt) vi.

The process in which LBGT people accept oneself as is, and are honest with friends, family, and acquaintences about their sexuality. compare out (2).
"Come out, come out, wherever you are... it's better than eyeballing the back of a closet door."


cute (kyut) adj.

Adorable. Another staple of the gay vocabulary. see fab, fabulous, yummy, scrumpable.

devil, the (deh'-vil the) n.
An angel who fell from heaven and tries to stir up chaos on earth often by playing on people's prejudices and fears. Often disguised as the extreme Christian Right Wing. see Jerry Falwell, Trent Lott


diva (dee'-va) n.

1. Singers that have earned many, many gays as fans. i.e. Madonna, Cher, Tori Amos, Whitney Houston, etc.
2. Status that club boys seek by festooning themselves with expensive clothing, jewlery, and glitter.


drag king (drahg' kihng) n.

A lesbian that looks just as good, if not better, in traditionally male clothing than a traditional male.


drag queen (drahg' kween) n.

A gay man that has too much style to be limited to the wardrobe of one sex (2).


drama (drah'-muh) n.

Short for melodrama. Action, events, and situations that are described in the manner usually reserved to horror writers and cheesy automobile commercial announcers. see drama queen.


Drama Club (drah'-muh-klub) n.

High school version of the Alliance of LBGT students.


drama queen (drah'-muh kluhb) n.

One who dramatically proclaims that his or her life is full of drama and acts as though they are in a soap opera full of heartbreak, affairs, and treachery. Can usually make a routine trip to the car wash sound more traumatic than the Argentine revolution.


dude (dud) n.

A term that rarely resides in gay males' vocabulary. If you say this at least three times a day, you are probably straight.


dyke (dik) n.

Term used to describe females attracted to other females. see lesbian, femme, butch, gay.


dykey (di'-kee) adj.

Rare. Something that pertains to lesbians. compare femmy.

Adhering to stereotypical female gender roles. It's a good word to describe most gay males. see flamer, flaming. compare butch.

fagmagnet (fahg'-mahg-neht) n.

1. A straight female who is attracted to mostly gay males.
"Poor Aimee, she's such a fagmagnet."

gaydar (gay'-dahr) n.

A sixth-sense that gays seem to have that allows them to tell if somebody else is gay, sometimes even before they open their mouth to speak.

gender bender (jehn'-der behn-der) n.

A less tactful way to describe a trangendered person.


gender role (jehn'-der rohl) n.

Set of ways people should act according to their gender.

On the night of Judy Garland's funeral, this bar was invaded by police officers who harrassed the patrons. The drag queens fought back, and the ensuing riot is an important landmark in gay history.
