lady cloths' for fear of being seen. As I started to put on my pants Mom walked by my door again and looked in, she said 'No not those cloths you are going as a young lady today!' I did as mother said and in half an hour I was ready to go, or so I thought. I went to my mothers bedroom and she was just finishing putting on what she called her 'War Paint'. She had not put on her slip or dress yet. She told me to come over to her and set on the edge of the bed. She always had several wig boxes on the dresser she shared with dad as her hair was very thin. She walked over to the dresser and opened one of the boxes and took a beautiful long haired blond wig from the box and came over to me and said 'hold still we are going to try this on',. She placed it on me head and it appeared to fix as if it was made for me. She said "There, that makes my pretty young lady look better." I could not see what I looked like in the mirror as I was facing the wrong way, as I tried to turn to see myself mother stopped me. She had me stand up and looked me over to see if I would pass. With a nod of her head she allowed me to turn arround and see myself in the mirror. What I saw was a very pretty young girl who had my face. I could not stop admiring my self in the mirror, I loved the way I looked. After a while Mom taped me on the shoulder and said it was time to go. Mother and I left home and went to the car, it was a quite Saturday morning and we saw no one on the way to the car. The drive to the Mall was uneventfull. Once there and parked, we walked into the Mall me first with Mom following watching every step I took, making sure that I behaved like a girl not a boy. After entering the mall Mom came up beside me and took my arm. She whispered to me "your doing fine dear. Today is going to be fun." She must have been planning this outing for a couple of weeks as she knew right where we were going. Our first stop was a stand in the center of the Mall called "Rings and things" She walked up to the lady at the counter and told her that I had just graduated from grammer school and as a present she was going to let me get my ears pierced. The sales lady said her name was Nancy and that I should have a seat on the stool in the center of her stall. While Nancy started cleaning my earlobes Mon was picking out a pair of earrings for me. Once clean she told me this might hurt and that I should hold still. When she pierced the first ear I was surprised more than hurt by the piercing. When she was done she handed me a sheet of instructions on how to care for my ears while they healed and Mom and I were off agail. At the time I didn't think any thing of it as I had told her thats what I wanted. But after it was done I got scared and turned to mom and asked "What is Dad going to say?" Mom just turned to me and said "you let me handle your father, every thing will be all right".
Our next Stop was the Cosmetic counter in J.C.Penneys, this time Mom Told the sales lady that I had just graduated and had promised me my first cosmitic make over as a present for good grades. Sandra, the sales lady, said she would be glad to do it. She started by taking a polaroid picture and writting across the bottom "before". What Mom called a make over took almost a half hour with Sandra telling me what she was doing and what she thought was the right shade of this or the right color of that for my skin. When she was done she took another picture. labeling it "after" . I hadn't realized the change in my appearance as she was working on my face but when I looked at the two pictures They looked like two different girls. Then I look at the mirror again and realized how much I had changed and how much I liked my new face. from there we went to several other stores looking trying on and yes buying a new wardrobe of cloths for me. I the middle of all the shopping we stoped for lunch at Dennys across from the Mall and were served by a waitress called me Miss. Although I sure several of the sales people had called me 'Miss' this was the first time I had really understood that I had really been accepted as a "girl', 'young lady', 'female'. I must have starred off into space for quite a while for Mom had to tuch my arm to bring me back. She was asking me if I had enjoyed our outing so far. I said it had been to best and happest day of my life. After a full day of shopping at the mall we drove home. As we pulled into the driveway the lady next door ran over to see mom. This scared me more than anything that have happened all day. Mom didn't miss a beat she had me get out of the car and she said she wanted her to meet her sisters girl from Florida. Mrs Herbert came over to me and said she was happy to meet me and she hoped I would have a nice visit. This was the end of my first outing with my mother but not are last.
