The Holzhauers and Bensons

~ 1930 ~

In 1930 Helen Holzhauer was six years old, living with her parents Frank 28, and Martha Holzhauer 27, her brother Carl 11, and her widowed grandmother Hilma Benson 53. Hilma had another daughter and son living in their home at 823 St. John’s Place in Brooklyn. The rent was $55 a month. They had a radio. Daughter Julia Benson 25, worked as a clerk in a restaurant. Son John 20, worked as a bookkeeper. Hilma and her husband immigrated from Sweden around 1893. Daughter Martha married Frank Holzhauer in 1919. Later that year Carl was born. Helen was born in 1924. Frank worked in a garage and Martha was a waitress in a restaurant.
