Karen Black is featured as
a transsexual who returns to her dust-bowl Texas town for a 20-year reunion of a
James Dean fan club. Her transformation from gay Joe to slinky Josephine
produces shock, disgust and admiration from her old girlfriends (Cher, Sandy
Dennis, Kathy Bates, Sudie Bond). Josephine, embittered by many of the
townspeople’s mistreatment of her when she was a man, seeks psychological
self-healing in her return to her pain-filled past. Black is especially good as
Josephine, projecting a subtly masculine femininity.
