When it was first announced that Hollywood was planning a
remake of the French farce "La Cage aux Folles", many were
predisposed to be wary of the idea. Would a film which seemed harmless,
gay-positive fun in 1977 seem dated and condescending in the late 90s? Would the
gay couple, Armand and Albert be trivialised by Nichols? Would this be another
‘drag queens are harmless and fun creatures" film that has been taken
over recently by Hollywood at the expense of non-cross-dressing lesbians and gay
men? Would we ever see the two men kiss each other or would this film be a
simple continuation of the desexualisation of gay and lesbian characters in
Hollywood films in the 90s? To find out the answers to these questions, you will
have to view the movie yourself.
