DOŅA HERLINDA AND HER SON
This engaging and subversively
heartwarming love story was one of the first films (if not the first) made in
Latin America which dealt positively with a gay theme.
Set in an upper class
middle-class world of Guadalajara, Doņa Herlinda wishes for her son only that
he live happily with mom, his wife ... and another man, if need be.
Her son, Rodolfo, a sexually
confused surgeon, is having a relationship with Ramón, a handsome music
student. When mom realises the relationship is romantic and deep, she helps
things along by having her son's lover stay with them, reasoning that
"Rodolfo has such a large bed"! But a price comes with the compromise
in this wickedly funny comedy of sexual manners.
"A gay-lib Mother's
Day card - a comedy that says you can have your mother's cake and your hot buns
too." - David Edelstein, The Village Voice.
