Fried Green Tomatoes

Director: Jon Avnet

Country: USA

Date: 1991

Adapted from Fanny Flagg’s novel “Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café”, this endearing adaptation centres on the relationship between two pairs of women in separate time frames. Idgie and Ruth, friends and business partners in the 1930s; and Evelyn and Ninny, who meet in the present. The elderly Ninny relates to Evelyn the story of Idgie and Ruth, childhood friends from her youth in a small Alabama town. Though at the core of the film is the friendship between Idgie and Ruth, the film only slightly hints at the romantic relationship between them – which was more significant in the novel – with several scenes awash with sexual tension. Of this, director Jon Avnet said, “You can take it how you want to. I had no interest in going into the bedroom.” The acting from the entire cast is excellent.
