Just Like a Woman

Director: Christopher Monger

Country: UK

Date: 1994

Adrian Pasdar stars in this gentle, gender-bending comedy about an American banker living in London whose penchant for lingerie gets him into trouble with his wife, who thinks he’s seeing another woman. She kicks him out, and he winds up lodging with Julie Walters, who’s just ended a 22 year marriage. After they strike up a relationship, he divulges his secret to Julie and rather than react with revulsion she helps him fulfill his fantasies. The film follows Pasdar, whose heterosexuality is never questioned, on a  trip to a transvestite club and depicts his humiliating arrest by the police. While basically a straight love story, the film nonetheless is an entertaining examination of gender roles in relationships. Based on Monica Jay’s book, “Geraldine”.
