MADAGASCAR SKIN
A delightfully charming and
offbeat love story between two men. The setting is a typical gay bar - with a
dance floor filled with sculpted handsome young men - and all alone is Harry
(John Hannah), a man ostracised by the beauty-conscious gay boys because of a
facial birthmark in the shape of the island of Madagascar.
The scene turns sad as the
disfigured protagonist finds no one to embrace - even when he tries anonymous
sex, he is rejected. He goes into a back room, crawling into the T-shirt of two
studs who have already crawled into one T-shirt. They watch him with cold, quiet
disgust and he is finally forced to leave.
We see him again on the beach,
in a surreal landscape, where he saves the life of a tattooed older man (Bernard
Hill) and petty thief. They soon share a house and the younger man watches in
awe as the older man eats insects.
Harry's homosexuality plays no
further overt role as the two men find their relationship turning to love.
A serious, artistic drama from
the director of Relax and Anchoress.
