DOING TIME ON MAPLE DRIVE
An unusually affecting,
sensitively-handled and gay-positive made-for-TV drama which marked the
directorial debut of Ken Olin.
Teenager Matt (William
McNamara), a star athlete and honours student courageously comes to grips with
his sexuality and comes out to his parents. The revelation strips away the
veneer of the "typical" suburban American family and exposes their
repressed dysfunctionalities, including alcoholism, abortion, school
difficulties and finally, Matt's homosexuality.
Matt's confrontation with his
parents occurs after he attempts suicide. When he return home he explains,
"It's better to be dead than to tell you I'm gay."
A compelling drama about the
tyranny of American heterosexuality.
