METAMORPHOSIS: THE GRANNY
LEE STORY
This excellent documentary
looks at the life and time of Leonard du Plooy, better known as South African
gay icon and disco queen, Granny Lee.
It traces his life from his
birth as a coloured boy in Kimberley in 1919 to his tragic death as a white
woman on the Johannesburg-Durban road in 1989.
Excellent archive footage of
the disco diva himself, as well as interviews with people who knew him, make for
riveting viewing, especially for those who saw him around during the 1970s and
1980s, without knowing much about his background.
The documentary is marred by
poor reconstructions, but this aside, this short film is an important document
in South Africa's gay history.
