From
the director of “An Early Frost” comes this intelligent and moving
AIDS drama. Julie Andrews and Ann-Margret star as the mothers of gay lovers
Hugh Grant and Zeljko Ivanek. Andrews is a wealthy businesswoman who remained
close to her son after he came out, while Ann-Margret, a barmaid from
Arkansas, refuses to accept her son’s sexuality and rejects him. When the
latter’s son becomes sick with AIDS, Andrews is persuaded by her son to meet
his lover’s mother and try and get the two to reunite. A serious,
straightforward story which, while suffering a bit from a
talking-heads style of filmmaking, remains quite compelling and
compassionate.
