San Francisco in 1976 is a city where the unlikely always
seems to happen, whether by coincidence or fate, and where true love comes in
unexpected ways. It’s a city buzzing with innocent but naughty fun, where
people go to co-ed bath houses for the cleanest orgies in town, and to the
supermarket and laundromat to meet potential lovers. Debutantes go to group
therapy sessions and society columnists try to spread gossip about their latest
affairs.
Mary Ann Singleton, a naïve young secretary from the
mid-west, tumbles headlong into this world and finds new friends with whom to
embark on a life filled with adventure, suspense and coincidence. Her landlady,
the enigmatic and mysterious Mrs Madrigal, cares for all of her tenants with
maternal affection as the individually pursue the key to love and happiness.
