THE TWO OF US
This touching story of two
teenage boys in love has had a tumultuous history since it was first mad in 1987
for the BBC Schools TV series, "Scene". Repelled by the film's pro-gay
stance, and propelled by the repressive Clause 28 - a government directive that
called for sex education classes to stop teaching that homosexuality is an
acceptable form of human behaviour -the BBC initially withdrew the film, and
finally broadcast it only after several cuts and a new "choose
straight" ending.
This video contains the
original cuts and the original ending.
The story concerns the
deepening friendship between Matthew, a handsome youth and recent high school
graduate, and his best mate, Phil, an outgoing senior. Phil begins to realise
that he has sexual feelings for Matthew, but vacillates between him and his
"girlfriend", Sharon.
Tired of the taunts of "nancy
boys" from Phil's classmates, and harassment from their friends, families
and authorities, the two elope to a seaside resort, defiantly telling people
that they are on their "honeymoon".
A sensitive, sweetly romantic
and ultimately uplifting story of love and being true to oneself.
