When
Love Comes
(1998, 94 min, New Zealand, Garth Maxwell) When Love Comes is another story about love and discovery. Rena Owens (who was great in the very sad film Once Were Warriors) is Katie Keen, a once-legendary pop idol for New Zealand but now with her career at a standstill. She's fled her touring boyfriend Eddie (Simon Westaway) and returned to New Zealand to catch up with her longtime gay friend Stephen (Simon Prast). Stephen's fallen in love with a songwriter, Mark (Dean O'Gorman), but the feeling's not reciprocal. Mark hangs out with his lesbian friends, Fig (Nancy Brunning) and Sally (Sophia Hawthorne). Sally, Fig, and Mark seem a whole generation away from that of Katie, Stephen, and Eddie. Each of these characters are complex and it's fun to watch their discoveries.
