Writer-director Christopher Guest's riotous mockumentary revolves around a bunch of lunatic pet owners from around the country converging on a dog show in Philadelphia. They are a yuppie couple (Parker Posey, Michael Hitchcock) with a depressed Weimaraner, lower-than-white trash Terrier wranglers (Catherine O'Hara, Eugene Levy), a Shih Tzu-loving gay couple (John Michael Higgins, Michael McKean), and the octogenarian's trophy wife (Jennifer Coolidge), who has more than a canine connection to her dog's trainer (Jane Lynch). Of the more than a dozen characters, Fred Willard steals the show as a sports announcer inexplicably hired to provide color commentary. Although largely improvised and unscripted, there is rarely a missed opportunity for hilarious jokes, which will likely have audiences barking in laughter.
With one-third of the cast playing gay characters, alternative lifestyles get more than a fair share of the good-natured ribbing. Among such rabidly fanatical pet owners, the gay couple and the two lesbians actually seem like the most normal lunatics of the bunch.
