Reader Tom Gross ("On gay-bashing," Voice, Dec. 4) uses a popular tactic employed by advocates of homosexuality: Take the offensive by attacking religious leaders like Pat Robertson, while at the same time distorting their deeply held religious beliefs about homosexuality.

Like millions of others, Mr. Robertson believes that homosexual behavior is morally wrong and violates the biblical principles fundamental to Christian belief. At the same time, however, that belief is balanced by the same love and compassion that Mr. Robertson has exhibited daily for 35 years through his international ministry.

Mr. Robertson condemns violence aimed at anyone-- including homosexuals. He told his national TV audience, "We abhor violence against homosexuals. We would counsel strongly in relation to homosexuality that you could hold your religious beliefs without beating people up and being violent."

This is the advice Mr. Robertson gave to a parent whose child is a homosexual: "You love the person. Grant love. Grant mercy. Don't be condemning, and try by prayer and the administration of the Word to show that one the way of truth."

Depite unfair attacks Mr. Robertson remains committed to taking the gospel message of Jesus Christ--a message of love, hope and salvation--to a hurting world.
