Satanism is basically a religion based on philosophy and science. The members of the Satanic Religion, known as Satanism, do not believe in a god nor a devil. They are their own gods meaning that they have a strong self image and are, indeed, individuals. Not because they are different nor weird, but by making their own choices in life and not letting anyone control them as you often see in many other religious cults (like Christians, etc.). They can be themselves and not hide behind a mask of self-worth like others who do let people decide everything for them.
Led by Anton Szandor LaVey, they grew in the number of members without talking anyone into joining (which they do not believe in recruiting people for their cause, unlike other religions who cannot stand the idea of letting the individual decide for themself). They just told people what they were about and those who loved the idea joined, while others who loathed the religion based on the term used for their name either rejected them completely by "turning the other cheek" completely or chose to attack them every time they got a chance. Despite Anton Sxandor LaVey's death that Satanists deeply mourned, the Satanic Church did not fall. It continued to grow in amazing numbers over the years.
