You may or may not have noticed but, its official, Berwyn is on the map!
Between the BDC’s “bullseye” advertising campaign, ABCs diversity forum, the BAC’s struggle over the spindle, and the passage of the Human Rights Ordinance we have made a rightful claim to our cultural and progressive independence.
BUNGALO has always said that We to are Berwyn, and has worked for this idea that Berwyn is both progressive and has a cultural identity all it own. With that said we should thank and congratulate not just BUNGALO founders and members, all who make this town great. Also we need to extend a special thanks to all who made our First Annual Berwyn Pride a success. Ann Filmer of the
16th Street Theater, North Berwyn Park District Thank you so very much. Arnie and Delores Salerno… thank you.
First Annual Berwyn Pride Weekend.
What is this all about you are asking yourself, right?
Well let me assure you it is the beginning of something special. The idea was born out of our desire to create a cultural connection with our membership and create a sense of community. Earlier this year Equality Ill. had screened a movie called “Freeheld”. They managed to generate some interest w/ late notice. Few here in the western suburbs were able to make this event. One door closes and another opens they say. Always on the ball Marge Paul (hey that rhymes) took action to see that more people have access to this extraordinary film. We partnered w/ the 16th Street Theater to screen this Academy Award winning Documentary. It was a special evening full of our neighbors and friends communing in the joy and sadness of this film.
The following evening, BUNGALO celebrated our 13th anniversary with a party at Salernos. The restaurant is a depot district staple and now moonlights as a gay bar. Yes you heard it right, A Gay Bar!
On that evening there was much to celebrate. Jack Corliss gave a moving oratory to the history of our organization and all of its successes. “Thirteen years waiting and five minutes work…” he said of the Human Rights Ordinance to the laughter of the crowd of over fifty people. Our Mayor O’Connor was there along with members of City Council, BDC, ABC and others. Then there is the recently renamed Founders Award. This year’s award was given to the Community Relations Commission. Their efforts along with BUNGALO made the passing of the ordinance possible.
Soon after dessert was over it was time for the transformation of the restaurant into a club atmosphere. Talk about fun! As some of our people were calling it an evening others were just arriving. Disco music gave way to Latin drag show complete with an Almodovaresque drag queen host! While I do not speak Spanish I hung on her every word. The crowd had completely changed from dressy diners to hipster Latino men that partied well in to the night.
It was an eventful evening, to say the least.
