Gay Bars
NOTE: General Information on gay bars in Memphis:
1. The drinking age in Memphis is 21 years of age. Most bars will have signs posted stating a photo ID is required for entry, regardless of age. Have a photo ID and be prepared to show it to outside security guards, door attendants (some bars have a cover charge on weekends or "after hours"), or to the bartenders, themselves. Usually once will be sufficient.
2. Most gay bars in Memphis are "beer bars" serving beer, wine coolers, and *setups* for hard liquor. You are allowed and encouraged to BYOB (bring your own bottle) of hard liquor into beer bars. Plan ahead and shop accordingly, if that is your beverage of choice. Be sure to ask prior to bringing in your bottle whether they serve hard alcohol. (If bar hopping, you can ask the bartender about the next bar you intend to visit.)
3. City Ordinance requires bars to stop serving alcohol at 3 A.M. (resuming at 7 A.M.). That doesn't mean they have to close at that time. Several bars remain open "after hours," especially on weekends. One bar (J-Wags), remains open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including all holidays.
4. While beer bars are required to stop serving alcohol at 3 A.M., that doesn't mean they can't continue to sell *setups* or that you must stop drinking your own hard liquor at that time. If the bar remains open (is an "after hours" bar), you can stay and party (drink) the night away... you just can't buy beer. Many patrons will switch to hard liquor after 3 A.M. (bringing their own bottles in at that time, or asking to share yours).
5. Most gay bars are in the Midtown area. This area has a reputation for petty crime (hustlers, hookers, alcohol and drug addicts, vehicle break-ins, etc.) and not too infrequent muggings. ALWAYS park your vehicle in a well-lighted area, and observe your surroundings when entering/exiting bars. Several bars have cameras and guards to ensure the security of their parking areas and safety of their patrons. Still, it pays to be alert and cautious.
