Below are links to sites related to the above mentioned
artist. I recently discovered this artist and I
immediately fell in love with his work, and the man
himself. (I'm in love with a dead man!) Perhaps it would
be more accurate to say that he is one of my heroes.
Wojnarowicz was a gay man who died of AIDS. On this
subject, he said "When I was told that I'd contracted this
virus it didn't take me long to realize that I'd contracted
a diseased society, as well". He was a tireless activist
and a prolific artist. He was also an accomplished author
and photographer, as well as a performance artist.
The exhibit of his work at The New Museum of
Contemporary Art in N.Y.C. ended on June 20, 1999.
Unfortunately, several of the websites showing his later
works are no longer in operation. If you ever get a chance
to see an exhibit of this artist's work, I strongly
recommend that you do so. Wojnarowicz was a self-taught
artist who, despite an horrific childhood, was able to
allow his genius to come through and live a creative,
courageous and brilliant adult life. Using iconography
that borders on primitive, and a palette that barely goes
beyond secondary colors, he tackled complex themes
involving sprituality, death, societal roles, governmental
roles, economics, religion, industrialization, AIDS, war,
love and sexuality.
He also sued the American Family Association and
won!
