Being in a Special Education class is nothing to be ashamed of. In the younger grades, students may be pulled out of their regular classroom, and go to a special room, just for him, a few others and the Special Education teacher. It takes a special person to be a special education teacher. These teachers have to know how to teach children with different kind of learning disabilities and those classified as emotionally disturbed. When you are in high school, you may have a special class one period, to help you and the other students learn how to study, take notes, and basically how to LEARN. The teacher there may give you some time to work on other things, and if you need help with a subject, they will try to help you.
You may notice, if you're in a special education class, that not all the students there have Learning disabilities. Some of them could just be slow at schoolwork, but sometimes there are students who are classified as emotionally disturbed they may have trouble doing work because they are depressed, or have another mental illness. The Learning disabled student is classified as SPEDLD (Special Education: Learning Disabled.) while the emotionally disturbed students are classified as SPEDED (Special Education: Emotionally Disturbed.)
If you are not in a SPED class, but are going to be in one, you should
know that you shouldn't feel scared or different because you will be in
one. The SPED program is to help you so that you can get better at your
other classes. If you have a Question please Contact Us,
and ask for Mary Ellen. (Her dad runs a special services program in a school
district.)
