IF I CAN MAKE IT THERE? |

Well, at long last here it is? |

October 1999: I?ve been here 5 weeks now and I just wasn?t able to find the time to get this done. Now I know what you?re thinking. "A Website? For an apartment? What a drama queen!" But really, isn?t this what the Internet is supposed to be about? Communication of information across vast distances that normally would take weeks to get across is now available in a matter of seconds thanks to this World Wide Web. So, enjoy the pics. This is the first generation of the site, the one that has no furniture in it. Thanks to my new friends at Graebel Van Lines, I?ve been living here for three weeks with pillows for chairs and a foamy thing for a bed. Not that I?m bitter or anything. J (I think that griping on a soapbox is the other thing the Internet is good for, but I missed that day in college.) |

My new place is in this fabulous building called "Le Rivage". It?s a 32 story building in the financial district right across the West Side Highway from Battery Park City. It was built in 1931 as an office building and converted / renovated in 1984. The lobby is art deco for days and I fell in love with it the minute I walked in the door. The view is great and the apartments are very modern. (Pre-war charm is for the birds! Who needs old wiring and rattly plumbing.) The place has a 24 hour doorman (although I think it?s misleading as it?s actually four different gentlemen, not one deranged man with buggy eyes saying, "This is my 5,842nd consecutive hour on shift! Can I help you with your bags?") laundry rooms on every floor and an absolutely FABULOUS deli / valet on the main floor. It?s costing me an absolute fortune (I won?t be so gauche as to say how much on a website, but I will entertain e-mail queries) but it?s worth every penny. This is what my life in New York was supposed to be like. J |

The job is also going great. I?ve spent quite a bit of time out of town since I started, but it?s great to actually work for a company that looks at training as not just a cost, but a revenue opportunity. My boss is great and the people in my office are a really fun bunch. The job I?m doing is pre-sales systems engineering which means I provide the technical part of the equation to account managers who work on accounts that Cabletron sells to on a direct basis (as opposed to channel resellers). They divide the accounts in the region (NY Metro and New Jersey is this office?s region) into vertical market groups. There?s a bunch of people who do ISPs; state and local government; financial institutions; channel resellers and business / commercial clients. The group I work in is the business / commercial group. They basically do all the Fortune 500 clients in New York that don?t fall into any of the other groups. What this means to me (because it is all about my needs) is that Martha Stewart Living and Tiffany & Company are two of our clients that I?ve done work for (amongst other, less fabulous sounding but equally important companies). I also did some photographic experimentation with a pose I thought would be suitably dramatic to give you all a chuckle. They actually turned out pretty well. Well, some of them did. You can?t win them all. J If you?re interested in seeing them, click here. |

And for now, that?s about it. There will be more in the next generation including such highlights as furniture! I might add frames or something if you?re lucky. J If you?re reading this it means that I probably miss you so do drop me a line to let me know you stopped by. Click the hotlink or e-mail me at swozny@deloitte.com. |
