Updated: Monday, December 07, 1998

The New Sacajawea One Dollar Coin Was Finally Approved By The United States Mint. The United States Mint Is Considering Six Designs For The Front Of The Coin. It Is Also Considering Seven Designs For The Back Of The Coin.

Representative Michael Castle Has Lost His Bid To Have The Image Of Sacajawea Eliminated From The New One Dollar Coin. We Wonder Just How Much Of The United States Taxpayer's Money Was Waisted By Representative Michael Castle In His Bid To Have The Image Of Sacajawea Replaced. We Would Like To Thank Everyone Who Sent E-Mail Messages To The United States Mint And Representative Michael Castle In Support Of The New Sacajawea One Dollar Coin.

Sacajawea Was The Fifteen Year Old Shoshone Indian Guide Who In 1804-1806 Accompanied The Lewis And Clark Expedition From The Northern Great Plains To The Pacific Ocean And Back. Sacajawea Is Responsible In Large Part For The Success Of The Expedition Through Her Navigational, Diplomatic And Translating Skills. She Was Also The First Recorded Instance Of An American Woman Being Allowed To Participate In An Official Vote, As She Was Accorded Full Voting Rights By Lewis And Clark As A Member Of Their Expedition.

Various Historians Disagree Over The Pronunciation, Spelling (Sacajawea Or Sacagawea) And The Meaning Of Her Name (Boat Launcher Or Bird Woman). But, All Agree That Her Bravery And Fortitude Were Instrumental To The Success Of The Lewis And Clark Corps Of Discovery.
