Top Tens

I do a lot of reading. I doubt I could specify particular novels, but my favourite authors (complete with examples, but not necessarily their best) are:-

  1. Terry Pratchett (Guards! Guards! ; Mort)

  2. Patricia Cornwell (Post Mortem; Hornet's Nest)
  3. Bernard Cornwell (The Sharpe series)
  4. Frank Peretti (This Present Darkness; The Oath)
  5. Douglas Adams (The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy; Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency)
  6. James Herbert(The Rats; Domain)
  7. Michael A. Stackpole and Aaron Allston (X-wing series)
  8. Peter David (New Frontier series)
  9. Andy McNab (Remote Control; Liberation Day)
  10. Jake Arnott (The Long Firm; truecrime)

Books I have read recently (other than Sci-Fi Tie-ins!) include:-

And I'm also wading through The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever by Stephen Donaldson at long last!

Confession Time
I have some Star Trek novels, other than New Frontier ones, and I've read most of Agatha Christie's books too. I've also been converted to Harry Potter and the His Dark Materials books, so I'm starting to branch out into so-called "children's" books as well

Turning the Page
I hate so-called novels that spend their entire time with minute description. American Psycho (Brett Easton Ellis) springs to mind.
And there are very few horror writers I like, although Stephen King's non-horror novels and novellas (The Green Mile, Dolores Claiborne, Misery) are good, as is James Herbert's earlier stuff.
And Dan Brown should never be let within 100 feet of a word processor again. Enid Blyton could write a better thriller.
