Mass Media & Gay Issues Traditionally Ukrainian mass media are homophobic because they reflect the opinion of their consuments. The most popular daily news paper "Fakty" with highest nationwide circulation even doesn't try to conceal anti-gay propaganda. Ukrainian state television acts the same way too. Even if a journalist manages to hold to an even and impartial style throughout his work, an editor often places contrary material nearby which is downright negative. The editors are not ashamed of allowing publication of openly homophobic materials that groundlessly accuse homosexual people of all the deadly sins or roundly insult them. News papers and magazines often embellish texts with loud photographs having no connection with the content. TV channels have used garish video illustrations - preferring shows of transvestites - even when a scientific conference is being covered. Gay publications are almost absent in Ukraine. The most long-lived of them is Odyn z Nas founded in February 1996 in Kiev. However it is difficult to find the issues of this magazine available - only in Kiev newsstands sell this magazine without fear to be brought to account following anti-pornographic article of Ukrainian Penal Code. In any other Ukrainian city the local offices of Public Prosecutor are less tolerant to the gay publications. Another gay magazine Soldier Of Love founded also in February 1996 but in Kharkov, was banned by local police after one year of existence.
