Out west here, we have what are called "cattle guards".
They are made of either pipe or bars laid across the road about 2-3 inches apart and the whole thing is about 3 feet wide. They are used in place of gates in a fence line so vehicles can go through the fence without having to open a gate. For some reason livestock, and in particular cattle, do not like to walk across "guards", so there is generally a gate next to it for when the livestock needs to be moved.

My brother, who works for the Bureau of Land Management(BLM) was called to Washington,D.C. to testify before a Senate budget committee and was asked by a flabergasted eastern Senator "Why is the government being asked to pay the wages for an armed guard at every fence gate?". Needless to say, after my brother explained what "cattle guards" really were the senator was a bit embarrased at his over-zealous assumption.
