the Bible tells me

Some devout Christians have formed an opinion that the Bible tells them something about homosexuality. Amazing! The concept of homosexuality developed in the nineteenth century. I wonder what the Bible tells them about telephones, television or nuclear energy? The Bible has little to say about diabetes or epilepsy, although they have been around for centuries.

Christians who take seriously what Jesus said know that he said nothing about homosexuality and very little about sexuality or the family. What Jesus did say about the family is no comfort for Christians who expect the Church to support their version of family values.

A search of the Gospels reveals that Jesus had most to say about money. He also said a lot about the way people relate to each other. Loving our neighbour shows that we love God.

Jesus did not leave a set of rules. He often confronted people who wanted to reduce religion to rules and ridiculed their attitude to life. Christians who search the Bible for rules have missed the point.

Jesus loves me this I know,
for the Bible tells me so

Jesus called people into friendship with God and to live as a community of friends. People can disagree about issues but still come away respecting each other. All baptised Christians belong in Christ's church and are welcomed at his table, regardless of their sexual orientation.

We recognise that among the people whose orientation is homosexual and who do not believe they are called to celibacy there are members of the church whose Christian character and pastoral gifts we respect.
