Requires: 1 yard (91.5 cm) spandex; 2-1/2 yards (2.25 m) of 1/4 inch (6 mm) elastic; 1-1/2 yards (1.37 m) of 1/2 inch (13 mm) elastic.
Level: Fairly Easy

  • Place pattern on fabric as indicated.
  • Trace pattern onto fabric with tracing wheel.
  • Use a ballpoint needle for spandex.
  • Use a stitch length of 3mm on straight seams.
  • Sew straight seams 1/4 inch (6 mm) from edge.
  • Use a stitch length of 4mm on zigzag seams.
  • Use widest setting on zigzag seams.
  • Stretch fabric as you sew.

1) Arrange pieces of fabric with right sides facing each other.

2) Sew straight seam 1/4 inch (6 mm) from edge.
3) Sew a wide zigzag stitch around edge shown, being sure the outside of the stitch catches the edge as you sew.
4) Open pouch and lay flat.

 5) Stitch back piece to front pouch using straight stitch, 1/4 inch (6mm) from edge.
 6) Sew a wide zigzag stitch on edges shown, being sure the outside of the stitch catches the edge as you sew.

 7) Cut 1/4 inch (6mm) elastic for leg holes as indicated for size:

Leg Elastic (2 pieces, 1/4 inch (6mm))

S = 20 inches (50 cm)
M = 21 inches (52.5 cm)
L = 22 inches (55 cm)

Butt ends of 1 piece of elastic to form a loop and stitch with a wide zigzag, using a 1 mm stitch width. Repeat for other piece of elastic.

8) Work with one leg hole at a time. Pin elastic to wrong side of leg hole from side seam to crotch seam as shown.

9) Sew between pins (indicated by red arrow). Using zigzag stitch, sew elastic to edge of fabric, stretching elastic evenly as you sew. Make sure stitch catches the edge of fabric.

 10) Finish sewing unpinned elastic to the rest of the leg hole with a wide zigzag, stretching the elastic firmly BEFORE you sew. It's easiest to pull the elastic tightly aligning it to edge of fabric, sew 4 or 5 inches (10 or 12 cm), then pull again and repeat. Continue until the elastic is sewn to entire leg hole. Repeat step 8-10 on other leg.

11) Cut elastic for waist as indicated:

Elastic (1 piece, 1/2 inch (13mm) wide)
S = 27 inches (67.5 cm)
M = 28 inches (70 cm)
L = 29 inches (72.5 cm)

Butt ends of elastic to form a loop and stitch with a wide zigzag, using a 1 mm stitch width. Divide into fourths and mark with pins.

12) Divide waist of suit into fourths and match marks with pins of waistband. Pin elastic to wrong side of fabric.

 13) Stitch waist elastic to fabric using a wide zigzag seam, stretching elastic to fit. Make sure stitch catches edges of fabric.

14) Fold leg elastic to wrong side of fabric, so the edge of the elastic is enclosed by fabric. Using a wide zigzag stitch set to 3mm, sew elastic to fabric.Repeat for other leg hole.
 15) Fold waistband elastic to wrong side of fabric, so the edge of the elastic is enclosed by fabric. Using a wide zigzag stitch set to 3mm, sew elastic to fabric.
 16) Finished garment.
