What does the Amendment NOT do?

This amendment does NOT legalize any activity that is currently illegal (e.g., prostitution, age of consent laws, rape). Nor does the amendment require "affirmative action." No one could be forced to hire, fire or rent an apartment to someone based on sexual orientation, just as they could no longer discriminate on that basis.

This amendment does NOT provide "special rights" to gay and lesbian persons, but only equitable treatment based on relevant qualifications rather than arbitrary categories. We do not consider open housing or equal employment as "special rights." We believe that gay and lesbian people deserve the chance to live, work and be productive members of the City of Galesburg without arbitrary discrimination.
