Life’s bitter irony
I am the recovering alcoholic killed by a drunk driver
I am the rotting tree trunk that falls and kills the nature conservationist
I am the hypocracy that causes the pro-life radicals to blow up the
abortion clinics, killing all inside
or the animal rights activist who doesn’t eat meat, but wears leather
just because it’s fashionable
or the headbanger who commits suicide by nailing himself to a cross while
listening to gospel music
I am the heterosexual jock who contracts AIDS by thinking “it’s a gay disease, and
besides, my bitch is on the pill. Why do I need a fucking rubber?”
I am the anti-depressant, which when taken in large quantities, is a
very effective way to kill yourself
I am the social worker who wrongly releases a child into
their parents custody, ending in a terrible tragedy that could have been prevented
I am the Scientologist who gives out the name and number of everyone I know,
including immediate family and loved ones
I am the pedophile who gets sent to prison only to be raped by underage boys
with names like Hector and Jamal
I am the injustice that sends an innocent man to his death, while
the real killer has a front row seat to the execution
or the politician who preaches about family values
while molesting his only daughter
or the born again Christian who loses faith
when his entire family is killed in a freak accident
or the “ex-gay” who gets his heart broken by every
woman he meets
or the high school valedictorian who flunks out of college his first year
I am the adulterer in a stable marriage
and the broken promise to a loved one
I am the aging child actor who can only find work in porno movies
or the pianist whose hands are crushed in a horrible auto accident
or the rapist who contracts Syphillis from his victim
I am the inbred down south in a Christian town
I am the despair and futility in the optimist’s eyes
and the murderous rage in the pacifist’s mind
I am the stray missile that hits the school outside of a warzone
I am the pyromaniac who is burnt to death
or the serial slasher who falls on his own knife
or the resentment in a mother’s eye when her daughter
grows up to be more beautiful than she
or the man lost in the desert who dies
of dehydration collapsing just inches away from a water hole
or the vegetarian in a plane crash who resorts to cannibalism to survive
I am the tree hugging hippie whose eyes are gouged out by spotted owls
I am the loser in life whose ultimate disgrace is a failed suicide attempt
or the college grad selling her body on the street for crack
or the junkie who OD’s on methadone
or the priest who sodomizes the altar boy just minutes after his baptism
or the birth defects caused by fertility drugs
life, the bitter irony...
