Are 64 Crayons Better Than 8
Hi again everyone and I am back to offer more words of discouragement on makeup. I find that I am better at telling you the things not to do instead of the things to do. I will leave that to the experts, the marketeers, and the "dream sellers." Yes, I said dream sellers. I once took a marketing course in college, and we got into a deep discussion of the cosmetic industry and how they could survive by selling grossly overpriced priced products. Most of the cost in the product is from the packaging and then from the advertising with very little money actually spent on product itself. So how do they keep us loyal and willing to come back to spend more money with them? Dreams!!!! They are selling us dreams. They sell the dream that their product will make us more beautiful. Now their product may do that but then again would not somebody else's product do the same?I heard a new dream today on the radio. One of the "fancy" department store cosmetic lines was inviting customers in to their makeup counter to sample the "new" colors for this summer. New colors? Did someone just discover a part of the visible light spectrum here to now unknown? The dream is that these new eye shadow shades are just the thing to set off your wardrobe from last summer and all summers before that. Now I do not know about you but one of my first cosmetic purchases was a lovely array 48 eye shadows in an attractive case. I mean here was every shade know to man (okay they just discovery some new ones today), and I would never need any eye shadow ever again. Well today I looked at my 45 shades again. I made the startling discovery that only three colors were the ones that worked best for me. I still have not yet figured out how to find the right color combinations to best accent my clothing. I know that the cardinal sin is to never use a shade that matches the color of your eyes. And who came up with that rule anyway? Is it the Eleventh Commandment from Moses, "Thou shall not use any shadow the same color as thy eyes." I attended the Magnolia Ball in April and my dress color was celery. What colors accent celery beside blue cheese dressing? I ended up digging the last remnants of my favorite colors out of the corners of their little holders.
So back to my tray of 45 colors. Every six year old will tell you that box of 64 crayons is better than 8. But is if you look at an open box of crayons you will find probably 8 used up and 56 still relatively new. Now I am not saying that we all act like six year olds; a lot of us act like four year olds when it comes to makeup. So I have learned that I need very few colors to do my makeup. The tray of 45 is very pretty and I do have that rare color of magenta plum but I have yet to find shoes to match it. And the large tray is very impractical and only fits in my largest tote so freshening up is not easy with a case the size of a TV dinner.
But I still have dreams that the marketeers sell to. I still dream of magenta plum pumps. And a celery colored dress without blue cheese dressing running down the front of it.
