My First Support Group Meeting

November 8, 1997

I have known about the Triad Gender Association (TGA) for several years. They were listed in my home town newspaper, and I often cut out their listing; but I lacked the courage to contact them. Earlier this year when they went on line with their web site, I made a tentative contact with them via e-mail but again I didn't have the nerve to do anything else.

While at Southern Comfort I met Charlotte who is on their board and she was "very" persuasive in getting me to come. So a couple of weeks ago I again contacted them via e-mail and followed it up with a phone call to Stephanie who sent me an information packet and directions to the meeting place.

Well I was a little nervous in that I did not know what to expect from this group; I might find that I have nothing in common with any of these people. I was unsure of the routine; they have a couple of bathrooms to get ready in so I did not even know if I would go dressed or not. I finally decided to go dressed, and to follow the lead that Tiffany used at her first support group meeting by dressing very casual. I wore black flats, black leggings, a purple top, and a black belt (the belt actually makes the outfit cute by accentuating the waist giving the top a short dress look). I also choose this because I could wear it under my drabs. I also wore a coat to hide the bra I was also wearing out of the house (remember I am still in the closet at home).

I found the location and went in and removed my shirt and pants and put on my makeup and wig, and I was ready to face new people. There were about 20 people who showed up at various times throughout the evening; they ranged from CD, TS, TG, FtM, some dressed and some not. There were even two others there who this was also their first TGA meeting. I met a girl whom I had met a Southern Comfort, and I got some make-up tips, and I had a great time. I also met a lot of very nice people whom I hope some very close friendship can be made. Unfortunately the evening rush by a lot faster than normal. As a group of them were headed for a local bar, I reluctantly headed back home (I could explain the midnight return but I could explain a 2 or 3 a.m. return but next time I will). This was a first but not my last.
