U R G E N T Dear Sir / Madam , PLEASE HANDLE THIS MESSAGE AT YOUR EARIEST CONVENIENCE DUE TO THE TIME LIMIT RESPOND TO HONG KONG GOVERNMENT. The Hong Kong Government has just released a consulation paper concerning its recently conducted survey on discrimination on the ground of sexual orientation in Hong Kong. The started of aim of this document is to collect public responses prior to deciding upon appropriate measures for tackling this kind of discrimination. We are gravely concerned that the government intends to use the results of its survey to argue that education is preferable to legisiation in combatting discrimination. It is our belief that legislation and education MUST go hand-in-hand. We fear that, without the support of the law, education programmes will have a limited impact, and progress towards the acceptance and integration of gays, lesbians and busexuals in our society will be seriously impeded. We therefore sincerely ask for your support in petitioning the Hong Kong Government to create legislation specifically directed against discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation in our society. As you may appreciate, this is a very significant moment for us; it is the FIRST time in the history of Chinese society that social measures to tackle discrimination against gays, lesbians and bisexuals have been publicly addressed at the governmental level. We hope that all of you will take this opportinuty to write and show your support for gays, lesbians and bisexuals in Hong Kong and help us taking another step towards a more tolerant world.
