Suzanne Westenhoefer
Uproarious

Once upon a time, cute, apple-cheek-ed, blond 'n' blue Lancaster, Pennsylvania-born daughters dreamt of becoming movie stars, then grew up, got married, and raised babies. It may still happen like this in some remote regions. But these days, there are also daughters like Suzanne Westenhoefer, who did, in fact, once dream of being a movie star, but now regularly pours herself into black leather, gets onstage , and makes lesbians scream — with laughter. Last time I caught her, at the Ark, Westenhoefer was in fine, fine form, exuberantly exploring the gamut of self and society.
After studying theater in a small college drama department where she received little encouragement, Westenhoefer headed to New York City for an illustrious career tending bar. A girlfriend, who appreciated the seemingly effortless and free-flowing stream of funny words that fell from Westenhoefer's mouth, signed her up for a comedy class. Soon she was working the town. When HBO came calling (she didn't even have to audition), she was more than ready to become the first out lesbian with her own comedy special.

Suzanne Westenhoefer's done quite well, and it's no surprise because she's well-stocked in the comic's stock-in-trade: great stories and the skills to tell them. Being a lesbian is the dominant theme, but her artistry — timing, gesture, asides, flow, seeming spontaneity — transcends this and makes an evening in her company a surprisingly nonpartisan affair. Laughter was loud, and I suppose due to the gender of the audience (I saw not a Y chromosome in the place), rather high-pitched. Uproarious is also a good word. Her stories about her childhood, her family, and her relationships reveal a miraculous talent for detail, nuance, and utter irreverence. Westenhoefer peaked at the evening's three-quarter mark during a wonderful story about her starstruck young self, flush with early career successes, attending a K. D. Lang concert, where she was invited to sit in the front row — on Martina Navratilova's lap. Suzanne Westenhoefer returns to the Ark, Friday, April 3. —Kate Conner-Ruben
