Movies You Should See
and why.
- Casablanca
- this movie is the modern equivalent to HAMLET insofar as the number of lines that are now a part of everyday speech! I won't list them. Watch it and see how many you can find. And I have not even mentioned Rick in his "Café Americana" brooding over the woman who walk out of his life and now casually strolls back in! "Of all the two bit gin joints why did she have to go and walk into mine."
- High Noon
- the closest thing to a real time movie you will ever find. And don't write back and mention Johnny Depp in Nick Of Time. High Noon is one of the tightest little films ever made. Every moment is pushing the story forward. Shot in high contrast black and white it looks beautiful. You feel the sheriffs desperation as he runs against total opposition to save a small town from certain doom if he does not stay to stop a returning outlaw. Might not sound like something to warm up the VCR for on a Friday night but trust me. My significant other gave me the weird screwed up face ,as if someone cut the cheese in front of him, when I went all googly when I saw it on sale, but he watched it and loved it!
- Stand By Me
- probably the best adaptation of any Stephen King work. Take it from me…King's short fiction (non-horror) out shines his horror. The movie The Shawshank Redemption was also based on a King novella. Enough with the literary criticism. Stand By Me is based on a story called THE BODY and the movie is incredibly faithful to the book. It is one of the most beautiful coming of age films about the loss of innocence. There is a story in the King mythology that Rob Reiner invited him to a private screening and after the movie King sat there amazed at what he saw. I think it could be true. Every time I watch it (up to 6 now) I find I associate with a different child. And for all you who love to see young actors in earlier roles: Wil Wheaton (a.k.a. Wesley Crusher), River Phoenix, Cory Feldman and a surprisingly plump Jerry O'Connell (a.k.a. the SLIDERS babe).
