THE UNIDRESSER MANIFESTO
dedicated to The Society of 364
For nearly five thousand years, since the dawn of human existence, the female gender has had the exclusive right and privilege to dress on the "soft side". Longer hair, daintier garments, and ornate apparel. In the twentieth century, only real women are permitted to wear clothes which show their legs under a single cloth garment known as a "skirt" or"dress".
A twentieth century male can today wear long hair, earrings, open-toed sandals and bracelets--but he dare not wear them all at once accompanied by a single cloth garment known as a skirt or dress. Even, if he is a competitive swimmer, or sadly has undergone chemotherapy, his legs and chest may be free of hair, but he dares not wear a garment around his legs of single cloth known as a skirt or dress. or he will be scoffed at, scorned, humiliated, and shamed by society.
In a society in which equal rights has become a standard for the world, and a catchword and beacon for all people of race, color, or political persuasion, even this simple and innocent expression of personal rights which hurts no one is made the target of vicious judgment and exclusion and discrimination by the very segment of society which itself possesses the sole "right" of such physical expression--women.
This manifesto of equal rights to dress is dedicated to the clearly established minimum ten percent of the male population (fifteen million strong) in the U.S. alone who on a given workday would if they could be so inclined to wear a dress or a dignified suit with skirt, heels, long hair, earrings, and even a modest touch of makeup. It is also dedicated to the ultimate population of real women in society who pride themselves in terms of their kind, gentle, accepting qualities and who will ultimately see that many men in their hearts and spirits would so dearly enjoy opportunities for socially acceptable feminine expression of a part of their human existence and being.
In the next century, males by the millions will emerge to take back the skirts to wear proudly and do so knowing that it is their innate human right to wear as they feel on a given day. In 1996, one day a year permits men to do so--Halloween. In the future society, there will be 364 more each year when there will be true equality of gender expression. In the meantime, women themselves are the starting point for such new awareness. They should be the last to criticize or complain. Let the woman who has never worn slacks or pants be the only one to throw stones of hurt and humiliation. If she has true heart, even she will understand and celebrate the new awareness. - Michelle Ayres
