Examining Plot
by
Michael Walker
19 November 1999
My life was changed forever the moment I
was born. Before it there was a long and luxurious span of time and
space and warmth and wet. No thoughts that I knew about, no fear, just the
sound and feel of my mother’s heartbeat, the sense of our blood moving
in tandem, and the touch of her inner skin cool up against me. Of
course her fears were my fears and her breaths were mine and the drinks of
whiskey she took warmed me and made my indeterminate muscles fall into
jiggle gigglies.
And there were other things too. The
sounds of another person with a gruff and angry voice, time to time
slammings, and once a sharp shaking of my world and pain and her crying
and wailing and moaning and crying. Most nights there was a static
crackling sound accompanied by odd music and hysterical sounding radio
announcers. Of course I knew nothing of the detail of these things until
after I was born. Before that, and right up to the repulsive and
trip into the glaring light of day, I was merely accepting of what was and
there was nothing more.
