Cascade Flyer Club - The Evolution
by Bob (10/00) (revised by Evan, 4/02, 7/03)
Welcome to Cascade Flyers, perhaps the most "zen" flying club on the West Coast. We're nominally part of the National Gay Pilots Association, and have been a club since December of 1996. At one time, we tried all those "club" things, like regular meetings and newsletters. We used to meet monthly at the Boeing Museum of Flight, but there were not enough people showing up.
Eventually, though, our mailing list started growing; and now we have a list of about 80 or so members, making us one of the larger local chapters. Since we no longer do a post office mailing, (because that costs bucks to do and we don't collect dues), we do ALL of our contact via email. (Thus, an email address and web access is necessary for membership.)
The club membership is a wonderful group of pilots and non-pilots; mostly male, reflecting the huge gender disparity in aviation in general.
The group covers all aspects of the flying spectrum, from airline transport pilots to GA folks. Most members fly out of Seattle and Vancouver, BC. and Portland Oregon.
Since Summer 2000 we had an annual fly-in to Orcas Island, to the cabin owned by one of our members and her partner, from Portland, for an overnight campout at the airport and a bbq at her cabin. We have had about 40 people and 15 airplanes, one of the larger fly-outs compared with our sister gay/lesbian flying clubs in the US. For Summer 2004, all activities were at the airport, including meals.
Our fly-in schedule is pretty much over by October as we generally do not fly IFR to club fly-ins for obvious reasons. We try to have potlucks or meetings about once a month or so in Seattle, Vancouver, B.C., and Portland, or whenever a member decides to have a party.
Welcome aboard!
