History of CW Productions
and the Miss Gay Empire State New York Pageant

C. W. productions was first founded in 1989 participating and producing many major AIDS benefits within central New York. In 1990 C. W. productions under the direction of Executive Director/CEO Roland C. Shea Jr. (that's me to the left) a.k.a. Miss Courtney Wells (and again to the right) developed and promoted the first Miss Gay Salt City Pageant. The pageant ran successfully for the following three years. The rights to the pageant were sold to another local promoter so other interest could be pursued.

In November 1993 I felt that there was a need for new pageant system to be created for New York State... A pageant where female impersonators would be able to compete against each other from throughout New York . I also saw that many female impersonators wanted to compete on a state level yet not at a national level. Back in November of 1993 most pageant's in New York State were preliminaries to The Miss Gay NY America Competition - a state preliminary to the Miss Gay America Pageant (by Norma Kristie Inc. of Little Rock, Arkansas). I also wanted to try a new concept - to give the All-American gay Male a chance to compete at a statewide contest.

Thus the Mr. & Miss Gay Empire State Pageant was created. The first pageant was held in June 1994 at Ryan's Someplace Else in Syracuse, New York. The pageant was a success and provided the necessary credibility and professionalism within the community which has allowed the pageant to thrive. The pageant remained in Syracuse for the next three years and continued to grow steadily. Changes were made from year-to-year, from re-arranging certain categories to the unfortunate discontinuation of the Mr. Gay Empire State title (due to lack of interest). Rather than becoming discouraged, I put all of my efforts into the Miss Gay Empire State Pageant enabling me to increase the prize money to over $1100.

In 1997 I decided to move the pageant from Syracuse to another city in New York. After looking throughout the state, Club Marcella of Buffalo finally was chosen for the fourth annual pageant. Due to our overwhelming success there, it has become perfectly clear that my goal to move the pageant to a different city within New York each year has been realized. This year it is likely that the Pageant will be held elsewhere within New York - with continuing success...
