Chapter 65A
THE OTHER GENDER
Monday, August 10
The cage was operational by noon Monday. The various
laboratories had already been equipped and the Research Department
facilities were now ready for use by the research staff.
Dr. Krell officially added two members to his research staff,
Dr. Sullivan, an expert in chromosome study and Dr. Billings, a
leading researcher in the field of aging. They moved into their new
offices in the Institute and accelerated their work.
The age reduction phenomenon was a significant concern. Although
the rate of reduction had slowed, it was nevertheless continuing. Tim
had become the principal concern due to his initial age. Tim began to
feel like a pin cushion as Dr. Billings took tissue and blood
samples. Although Dr. Billings’ work had been directed toward
reducing the aging process, he had quickly moved into the new
challenge several weeks before.
His findings were remarkable in their simplicity, the skin cells
in the transformed bodies were now female, more delicate and simply
too new and healthy, and free of any signs of aging. He predicted
that the physical appearance of Timothea would stabilize with an
apparent age of between sixteen and eighteen years, the others
somewhat in proportion to their ages but on the young side. Their
bodies would not revert to pre puberty and spoil their sex lives, he
jokingly assured them, as the rest of the body was not affected. He
also anticipated that their outward appearance would eventually catch
up with the rest of their body to an extent since the overall body
would tend to reach an equilibrium within itself. It was still a
youth pill of sorts as far as appearance went.
The apparent increase in flexibility was real. Some of the
joints, those that were changing to a female configuration such as
the hip, elbow and shoulder had been rejuvenated to a point. The
female configuration of those joints was also inherently more
flexible.
Dr. Sullivan, an expert in chromosome study, had also been
working with Dr. Krell for some time and felt that the XX chromosome
could be changed to an XY by inverting the wave forms. His basic
argument was that the cells of the egg the female produces contain
two X chromosomes and the fetus remains female for a significant
time. It is only when the male Y chromosome replaces one of each of
the XX chromosome pairs that the fetus begins to change to male. He
felt that one of the X chromosomes must be more susceptible to change
than the other. Therefore, if the proper radiation were applied, only
one would be converted. He hoped that this process of replacement was
independent of age as it had seemed to be in the examples so far.
His move into his office at the institute provided him with
access to the CMM for experiments. His final tests supported his
theory when XX chromosome pairs in living tissue cultures were
converted to XY. However, neither doctor was very hopeful that the
ones that had already been changed from XY to XX could survive being
changed back since one of the X chromosomes appeared to be somewhat
abnormal. He wanted to monitor the new cells that were continuously
forming in the group to see if the new cells exhibited the same
abnormality. If not, then reversal might be possible, but not for at
least ten years.
His first test of a new cell was performed on an egg taken from
Darine. Her egg would be made up of newly formed cells, not ones that
had been transformed, it showed a perfect XX pair.
Whether or not the abnormal X chromosome would be passed on to
the children of transformed women had been a significant concern for
Dr. Krell. This finding was a relief to him.
Dr. Sullivan did not feel that tests on primates would be
beneficial since their chromosomes were not close enough to man’s and
initial tests had shone no effect on them. Therefore, since there was
a volunteer available, the next step was to find out if the initial
group could be changed back to males.
Friday, August 14
The first use of the cage since it had completed the
transformation of the group was made on Friday, August 14. It was a
key experiment and unfortunately validated a concern of both Dr.
Krell and Dr. Sullivan. Dr. Krell’s terminally ill male patient, who
had undergone the initial two treatments and had been successfully
transformed to a female, died during an attempt to transform him back
to a male. He had collapsed and become comatose during the treatment.
Detailed examination showed that, just as Dr. Krell and Dr.
Sullivan had suspected, the slight difference in the two XX
chromosomes in the transformed cells was critical. The one that had
been changed from a Y was not transformed back to a Y, it had been
essentially destroyed.
The research institute was named the Andrew Watkins Genetic
Sciences Research Institute in his honor. Mr. Watkins had a
sizable estate and no living relatives. He had willed his estate to
establish an endowment at the institute for further study into
reversing the transformations. A small part of the endowment
established a monitoring program for the group to determine if their
abnormal X chromosome would stabilize as the cells renewed
themselves.
One of Dr. Krell’s female patients had volunteered for the
experimental program at the beginning of the initial operation. Her
mental state over being a female was extreme and she had attempted
suicide on two occasions rather than continue to live as a female.
After prolonged therapy and consultation, Dr. Krell agreed to let her
try.
Monday, August 17
The test on Dr. Krell’s female patient was scheduled for Monday
and went off with no obvious ill effects. After one day, blood and
tissue tests confirmed that she now had XY chromosomes. There was
also a noticeable reduction in breast size. Her genitals were also
beginning to transform into normal male organs, although at a much
slower rate than the transformation from male to female had
progressed. By the end of the second day the meatus had relocated to
the end of what had been her clitoris, her vaginal opening had
closed, her labia had been replaced by a scrotum and a clear outline
of a penis was now obvious between the closure and her clitoris. The
clitoris had enlarged to form a moderate sized penis by the end of
the third day. By the fourth day he could maintain an erection and
the ovaries had descended into his scrotum which was now under the
base of a normal sized penis. There were no visible signs of any
female genitals.
Dr. Hopkins, who now consulted for the Institute when required,
had been called in. He noted that the transformation process appeared
to be similar to that of the embryo in its transformation to male
beginning at about eight weeks. XY chromosomes had shown up
everywhere and begun to correct the errors they found in the various
organs. After one week, testosterone levels began to increase
indicating that the ovaries were now functioning as testes. His
breasts could now be accepted as those of a male, although somewhat
large. The male hair pattern had begun to form and facial hair was
now obvious. At the end of the second week he was able to ejaculate.
His sperm appeared to be normal, both male and female. Dr. Krell felt
that he was fully capable of intercourse if he wanted to do so.
Extensive laboratory tests showed that his X and Y chromosomes
were perfect.
The next decision to be made was whether or not Cindy, and then,
after her delivery, Linda, would, or even should, attempt the
transformation. They had both completed the counseling sessions and
Cindy was adamant that she be allowed to do it. Susan and Dr. Krell
felt that she was making the decision out of sincere devotion to her
family and that she fully understood the consequences of her
decision. Darine fully supported her and would be one of the
observers. Her transformation was scheduled for September 11.
Friday, September 11
Darine and Cindy woke up early that morning. There wasn’t much
conversation as they dressed and ate breakfast, all that could be
said had been discussed and decisions reached. David had dressed
himself and ate with them. Cindy’s mother would keep her grandson
during the day for the next few days, he liked to visit grandma. She
didn’t want to watch her daughter do this, keeping David would keep
her mind off of what was going to happen. The thought of losing her
daughter weighed heavily on her mind but she knew why Cindy wanted to
do it. She thought about the early years with her husband and
understood that it had to be done, Cindy would still be there in the
form of Cinwell.
"Have you got everything, Darine"?
"I think so, come on, David, time to go."
"Hi, mom," said Cindy, "Here’s all of David’s things." "Don’t
worry, I’ll see you next week, I won’t look quite the same, but I’ll
still be your child and I’ll still love you."
"I’ll still love you too, I’m sure you’ll make a handsome man
and I’ll be proud of you."
Darine parked in her usual place and they walked to the waiting
area in the first floor of East wing.
Jo, Linda, Timothea and Karen were already there when they
walked in.
"Hi, everybody," said Cindy, "I’m glad you came, it makes me
feel better."
"Hi, Cindy," chorused the group.
"I wish I could be going in there with you," said Linda.
"I’ll tell you what it’s like," said Cindy.
"Cindy, come over here to the table please, I need a blood
sample before you go downstairs." "I’ll take another when you get to
your room. I’ll tape that needle in place and plug it so I don’t have
to keep sticking you for more samples."
Michelle called up from the control room and said she was ready.
They rode the elevator down, it was only one floor but a hospital
elevator had been installed in case an emergency arose and a gurney
had to be used.
"Good morning everyone," said Dr. Krell, "Cindy, are you ready"?
"Yes."
"Come in and have a seat," said Michelle as she held the door
open.
Michelle secured the cage and shield doors, entered ‘female to
male’ into the computer and pressed the start button.
The CMM ran for the required time and turned off. Michelle
opened the shield and cage doors and escorted Cindy out.
"I did it," said Cindy, a faint smile on her lips as Darine
hugged her.
"Karen will take you to your room," said Dr. Krell, "I will be
in to see you shortly."
Everyone rode up in the elevator except Michelle who stayed
behind to shut down the system and store the disk that contained the
record of Cindy’s treatment.
Wednesday, September 16
Cindy remained at the clinic until Wednesday when Dr. Krell felt
that her physical condition was stable and her mental health would be
better served by allowing her to return home to her family. Darine
brought her to the clinic each day for a brief examination. After two
more weeks Dr. Krell had papers prepared declaring Cinwell Skinner to
be a male, the husband of Darine and the legal father of David. The
name ‘Cinny’ or ‘Cin’ seemed to stick but Cinwell didn’t mind, at
least among friends. They kept the name Skinner because of David’s
age and his friends.
Now it was Darine’s turn to help Cinwell shop for clothes. They
just got a few of the basics at first as it was obvious there were
going to be significant changes in his size.
Thursday, October 8
Linda had been pregnant for three months and was enjoying it.
She woke up each morning being glad she was pregnant, even those
three or four times when she was in the bathroom throwing up at
first.
She looked over at Jo who was trying to ignore the alarm. They
had been using the dildo last night and had not gone to sleep until
almost two a.m.
Linda rolled over and lay partially on Jo as she kissed her,
"It’s time to get up, lover, this is the price you have to pay for
good sex."
"Can I buy some more tonight"?
"After Cinwell and Darine leave, remember, they’re coming over
for dinner."
"Yeah, I’m looking forward to that," said Jo, "I bet you have a
lot of things to talk to him about don’t you"?
"Yes, I wonder if it’s going to feel strange, asking a man about
those things"?
"Probably, just think of him as Cindy, maybe that will help,"
said Jo as she untangled herself and got up.
"Anything interesting happening at work today"? asked Linda as
she put their juice and cereal on the table.
"No, we’ve got a female to male transformation on Monday. We’ve
stopped doing them on Fridays, too much disruption in the staff’s
weekends, the patient’s too." "If we do it on Monday, we can send
them home on Friday."
"That does sound better," said Linda, "I guess experience has
shown that they really don’t need to stay, do they"?
"I think it’s the psychological part, the transformation is
slower for women and the experience seems to be more traumatic for
them." "The loss of their breasts really seems to get to some of
them."
"I wonder how I’ll feel," said Linda as she cupped her breasts
in her hands and looked down at them.
"I’ll get used to it," she said, putting on a smile as she
kissed Jo and got in her car.
Linda had gotten home first and had the roast in the oven by the
time Jo came in. Jo fixed the salad and Linda helped her fix the rest
of the things that go with a roast beef dinner. Linda had just turned
the oven off when she heard Cin and Darine coming up the drive. She
greeted them at the door, "Hi, Cin, Darine, come on in and sit in the
family room; dinners almost ready."
"Hi, Linda, Jo," said Cin, startling Linda with his deep male
voice.
Linda blushed slightly, remembering the night she had taught
Cindy how to perform oral sex. Now, here she was, a handsome man,
getting ready to eat dinner with her and Jo.
"Hi, Linda, Jo," said Darine, "something sure smells good."
"Still can’t keep your mind off food can you," smiled Linda as
she went back to the kitchen, "take your seats, the food’s ready,"
"Not when it smells this good," replied Darine, "and I’ll have
you know, I’ve lost another twenty pounds, I’m down to 140."
Jo served the salads and helped Linda bring the rest of the
food.
"I fixed the roast and Jo prepared the rest," said Linda, "she’s
getting to be a good cook."
"They say men make the best chefs and Darine’s doing a lot of
our cooking now."
"I sort of like it," said Darine, "I’ve always liked food, now
don’t anyone respond to that last statement."
"I think I’m beginning to like to cook," said Jo as she cut the
roast and passed it around.
"You satisfied to stay where you are, Darine."
"I think so, Jo, and so is Tim. I guess Michelle’s working for
you now"?
"Yes, she’s in charge of operating and maintaining the CMM and
is helping me with new component design."
They finished dessert and went to the family room for a drink
and conversation.
"Cin, are you glad you did it, I mean you, physically,
mentally"? asked Linda. "Try to separate why you did it and
concentrate on your feelings."
"That’s a good question, and one we both have asked a number of
times, even before I did it." "I guess the answer is that I am
satisfied with what I have done."
"Being a man is not all that bad," smiled Cin, "the sex is sure
different, but it’s great, it’s not as intense but it really is
satisfying, and my body is easier to live with."
"Easier to live with"?
"Yeah, my breasts were fun to have and all that, and I enjoyed
my softness and fixing myself up, but now all I have to do bathe,
shave my face and comb my hair; I don’t even have to shave if I want
to grow a beard."
"Clothes are simpler too, aren’t they," said Linda.
"You can say that again. Remember what Susan told us about a
man’s outlook or perspective on life? Well, it’s starting to happen."
"Are you still turned on by guys"? asked Jo.
"Yes," said Cin as he looked sheepishly at Darine who smiled
back. "It’s changing though, the sensual feelings associated with
seeing a real hunk are fading."
"I guess it is the same as it was for me," said Darine, "Girls
don’t turn me on anymore, but handsome men like Cin sure do."
"You are a good-looking man," said Linda, "are you getting
taller"?
"Yes, right much; my hips are getting smaller and my shoulders
broader too," replied Cin. "How’s your pregnancy coming along"?
"Great, no problems, only six months to go; March twenty-fifth."
"How do you like having periods, Jo"? asked Darine.
"Oh, I just love it," replied Jo sarcastically. "I had my first
one on Thursday, August 13, my second on September 10 and my third
today. I picked up where Linda left off, she stopped having hers and
I started having mine the next month, every fourth Thursday, just
like clockwork."
"Another point," said Cin as he watched Linda trying to control
her laughter.
"Well, Darine, if you don’t like having them, I can stop them
for a while," smiled Cin.
"Is that a promise"?
"What are you two talking about"? asked Linda, "Is it what I
think it is"?
"Yes, we’re going to have another child as soon as Cin can get
around to it," smiled Darine. "We couldn’t do it last month but I
should be fertile next Wednesday, we’re trying to do it now."
"Are you ready for this"? asked Jo.
"Yes, I know how happy Cindy was when she was carrying David and
I think I’ll feel the same way," said Darine, "what a change from
when I couldn’t even stand to look at my breasts, huh Jo"?
"I’ll say, you’ll beat me to it. I won’t be able to get pregnant
until next summer."
"Well, we’ve got to go get David from my mother’s house," said
Cin, "thanks for the dinner."
"Glad to have you, and thanks for all the information, it helped
a lot," said Linda, "bye."
"You started your period today, Jo"?
"Yeah, I knew it was coming yesterday, I had some cramps just
like you described so I put a liner in my panties this morning and a
tampon at noon when I saw the stain. They really don’t bother you
much do they, the cramps"?
"They bother some women a lot, I guess we’re both lucky."
"Cin sure is taking this well," said Jo, "a lot better than I
did, even with your help."
"It’s the counseling, and she wanted to do it, it was all
expected," replied Linda, "I don’t think being a woman was a big
thing with her, it was just what she was. I hope I can do as well."
